Water heater died, got a new one. It has to be one of the most unhinged temperature scales I have seen. It started at an A out of Very Hot, which was too hot, so we turned it down to Hot. We’ll see how that goes, might turn it down to “ “ later.
Hot was too hot, turned it down to
@minrk get a sharpie and write "medium" (or "med" if there's not enough space) in that blank spot.
@minrk 🤯 This hurts my brain.

@minrk OK I have to know

is it a detented dial, ie does it click into the different settings or can you slide it between so you can have half of C and half B?

@alisca continuous slide
@minrk thanks!! I would love to hear what half Hot and "''" feels like 😂👍🏻👏🏻👋🏻
@minrk it's "!" , see how it points to the triangle icon?
@minrk yet another way to avoid using the metric system?
@minrk Is that blank or a poorly aligned ⚠?
@mansr cropped out; it’s a warning that as you make water more hot, it gets hotter.
@minrk @mansr
Scalding risk, increases with your ABCs
@minrk they probably repurpose an iron for this 🤨
@minrk it's like one of the diffusion models was asked to design the control knob system.
@minrk
"hey man can you turn down the heat a little"
"sure i'll put it on "
"put it on what?"
" "
"..?"
" ."
@minrk I'm so happy to not have to deal with water heaters
instead we have electric showers

@minrk

Sadly, it's pretty common. Last two water heaters I've had were like that.

All I can think is that it's less "what temperature do you want?" and more "How often do you want the burner to run?" since I guess they're too cheap to put a thermocouple near the top of the tank.

FWIW, I think they also screwed up the labeling. " " should be "Low" and "Low" should be something like "Vacation".

@minrk not totally relevant but just reminded me of this little nugget (contains swears) that makes both no sense and perfect sense at the same time https://youtu.be/P4_6e5IaQXM?feature=shared

@minrk

Yes, but what if it went to eleven?!?

@minrk ooh I've had this dial before I never understood what was going on
@minrk The way they label the scale on a lot of water heater thermostats make no freaking sense, I still don't understand why they label them this way but it's been that way for decades. So each mark is *supposed* to be 10°F apart, with HOT being 120°F. If you want it hotter, A = 130°F, B = 140°F, C = 150°F, and VERY HOT = 160°F. You generally shouldn't go any lower than HOT to prevent potential growth of some pretty nasty bacteria in the tank... The low setting is typically used when you know you won't be home for an extended period of time, like when you go on a long vacation.
@baralheia @minrk Is this Americans trying to come up with something as confusingly vague as Gas Marks?
Gas mark - Wikipedia

@minrk our modern ones just show the °C they heat to, and modulo the ramp-up phase with a very short overshoot it’s very precise (taking into account loss in the pipes between heater and faucet)

@minrk
I think that's finally even worse than the electric one what I deal with. I could put my thumb in the image for scale but it would cover the whole "dial". You use a miniature screwdriver to adjust it.

Last time I adjusted it my wife asked "what's it set at now" and I'm like "i dunno, somewhere between 120 and 150. She's like "no seriously, tell me " so I took the cover off and showed her and her response "that's the dumbest thing I've ever seen, why would they do that"

@minrk maybe "" once was "⚠️" but the warning sign itself decided to escape from the danger

@minrk

Set it to "square." It will reach "purple" in about 40 minutes and then double that. Bob's your uncle.

@minrk I like to set mine to be a little Hot-A than most people.

@minrk Mine has roughly the same scale. I have found "A" to be pretty good, but YMMV.

@minrk Mine is like this too. It’s pretty typical.

@minrk @brainwane Must be from the same people who made the fuel gauge in my car, which has 12 at the top and 7 at the halfway mark. The needle sits above the top (12) mark for about half a tank and then drops rapidly.

I use the trip counter (reset when filled up) to estimate when I need to fill up again :)

@minrk No, this makes sense. Numbers would be confusing - some people use Fahrenheit and some use Centigrade, but everyone speaks English, so this way it's universal. /s
@minrk empty mark should be labelled '7', to complete this chaos
