I was running out of space on my home server's storage, so I purchased two new larger hard disks which I'm going to replace the previous ones with. These are not boot disks, and I'm thinking of trying #ZFS on them, with a simple 1+1 mirror. I've read up some introductory guides, so I more or less have an idea about what I'm supposed to do, but are there any caveats that the Fediverse would like to share before I dive in?

I wish to thank all the people that gave me recommendations for this new adventure of mine. I just created by first #zpool and #zfs dataset, and I'm copying over all the data I have on my “classic” mdadm RAID. After I'm done with the copy, I'll swap the relative place of the ZFS disks and RAID disks, and make the ZFS pool the primary.
OK, data copied over, time to swap the disks. Wish me luck.

Well, that did NOT go as expected. Apparently the new disks are 1mm too thick to fit in the guides my case has, or my case guides are 1mm too close for these disks. Is that, like, allowed? Is either of these things out of spec? I am NOT happy. I can keep using the frigging thing, but only through the external JBOD which is NOT ideal 8-(

I'm really not looking forward to having to transplant this server to a new case 8-/

That being said, I'm open to recommendations about possible computer cases to look into, ones with a sizeable number of slots for disks (at least 2x2.5" for the root SSDs, plus 6x3.5" for the data disks).

EDIT: case should be for ATX motherboard if possible, since I'd rather avoid getting a new motherboard too 8-D

@oblomov I’m using a Fractal Design Node 804 for my #HomeServer. It can handle 8x3.5”, 2x2.5” and has 2 extra Slots for 3.5” or 2.5”.
Yes, it’s a kind of a quadratic big boy compared to some other cases, but it sits on my shelf, working fine and can handle all my drives. If you need many drives it’s a recommendation from my side.
@opendev thanks. This looks definitely interesting, but if I'm reading the description correctly it's a micro-ATX, so I'd need to get a new motherboard for that too, which I'm hoping to avoid. Actually, let me edit my post to specify that 8-D
@oblomov Ah, yeah, sorry, it’s a Micro ATX/Mini ITX. Got my hands on two cheap Gigabyte MC12-LE0 for it, so it was fine for me. But it’s understandable that you want to avoid buying a new one. At least it’s an emergency plan if you find nothing else. 😅
@opendev ah, Fractal Design seems to also have multi-HDD cases though, will look into those.
@oblomov take a look at Jonsbo N3.
I haven't used it, but saw recommendations from time to time.
@alexgreen thanks, will look into it
@alexgreen oh, just looked it up and it's for ITX motherboards. If possible I'd prefer something for ATX to avoid getting a new motherboard too. I've edited the post to clarify.
@oblomov Fractal Node is another recommendation - https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/node/node-304/black/
They may have bigger case as well

@alexgreen yup, I've seen other recommendations for Fractal Node. That's too small too, but the same company also has the Define series that seems more the kind of size I need.
