AI won’t kill literature, it’ll just colonise the middle ground where most writing lives. From calligraphy to photography to synthesisers, every “threat” to the arts created more art. The monasteries will remain.

@ridleypark

If only the AI being aggressively proliferated was actual "Intelligence", I'd agree. I fully support Artifical Sapience.

But what we have today is anti-humanist capitalist conglomerates wanting to algorithmically automate (amongst other things) culture, by saturating an already ailing market (literacy is plummeting) with literal slop, further pushing the Overton window towards shallow ignorance and cultural deafening.

@Rosencrantz Yes. That would be nice. The challenge, I think, is that we tend to compare AI (ignoring the misnomer) to top producers and artists rather than the average output.

AI can outperform the average. This is why I feel Dostoevsky is safe, but Amrita Kindle may not be. I think "high art" is safe.

That most Americans read below a 6th-grade level is scary enough, but they are not buying and reading books anyway. Some are arguing against a use case that simply doesn't exist.

@ridleypark

I see your point, but I would not be so quick to dismiss this as a non-existent use-case. I lack statistical evidence to the contrary, but I do possess anecdotal;

A few years ago, the most well-earning authors in Sweden where a pair who churned out 20+ novels per year, naturally using AI for the base of their production

Furthermore, the inclusion of capitalist-run "AI" to undervalue creativity will only reinforce the divide between the literate and the not, which I think is bad

@Rosencrantz I stand corrected. I should have said edge or corner case instead of non-existent.

The trend may grow from where we are to a great capture of market share. I am familiar with how AI music is "infesting" Spotify.
