Harvard scientist warns interstellar object blasting toward Earth ‘may come to save – or destroy us’

31/ATLAS is only the third interstellar object to be detected in our solar system

@lorry

Nice, this plot just keeps getting better.

@lorry is our first FTL probe returning. Launched in 2066 the faster than light characheriscs causing time dilation with the probe arriving before it left, including the physics and engineering insights that will take 41 years to perfect to allow the probe itself to be launched.
😁
@curiously Aaah but this one isn't even at NFTL, so maybe it's one Mars sent out three billion years ago coming home to the Solar System?
@lorry well the ancient Martians know how to guide an object, with a 3 billion year travel time the have practically reverse parked it into it original launch tube, impressive
@curiously You know what the Martians used to say about meteors, they're just like homing pigeons, but harder to chew on!
@lorry lol avi loeb is at it again?  I think the word "scientist" is richly exaggerated for that nutjob
@bazkie But then again he's the gift that keeps on giving - And apparently, I may actually get my Rama film, it's finally in production, but I think with a different cast and creative team.

@lorry what is this Rama movie about?

(I must admit Loebs dumbassery is funny, but he is giving science a bad name!)

@bazkie It's an Arthur C. Clarke book (which I think ended up as a trilogy) about a large rock like object that appears to be "steering" passing by Earth, and the crew of the ship sent to go and investigate it.

It's a very slow book, heavy on description and nothing much happens, which has always made people think it would be really hard to make and sell as a film. But being slow doesn't make it not-interesting. It is fascinating, though I don't really like the path of the later books much.

In an ideal world (and when AI can do it, I will ask it to!) it would be ideal as an interactive VR movie that allowed you to explore before you moved onto the next parts. But I guess I will settle on a movie for now.

Morgan Freeman has been associated with the movie for years, and is somewhat obsessed with it; in a good way:

@lorry ah, thanks for explaining! I'm all for more Arthur C Clarke movies!

@bazkie Now there's a dude who would have probably been in the #EpsteinFiles if he'd been a bit younger.

But he was a good writer and a good futurologist - Here's one of his interviews from 1974 where he predicts home computers, online banking and working from home.
