"An even odder feature of the Palmer report was its failure to discuss the relationship between the diseased culture of the immigration department and the policy which had given rise to the disease – mandatory, unreviewable and indefinite detention of asylum seekers, whose only crime was to have appealed to Australia for help. The indefinite (and sometimes "life-long") detention/imprisonment/jailing of #Refugees by #Australia's government is authoritarian brutality written large.

And it was real total control - #NewZealand offered to take some of the "detainees".
Australia refused.
As in "You came here and asked for help, now we will not let you leave the prison camp."

"Australia still adamantly refuses to even accept the offer of the New Zealand government to resettle 150 people ..."

Australia's man-made crisis on Nauru

Six years after the Australian government began sending people seeking asylum to Nauru, there are still around 900 people left on the island, including an estimated 109 children. All of them will have been there for over four years. Almost 200 people lived in a processing centre, including 14 children, until they were cleared out along with tents and temporary accommodation they were living in for the Pacific Island Forum.

#TonyAbbott, former PM of #Australia, shit-stain on our history, went off seeking to spread the de-humanising authoritarian methods.

Wondering if he also gave advice to Trump's #StephenMiller that was used to shape the fascist #ICE project.

Tony Abbott has some controversial ideas on migration and he thinks Europe should take them on

Tony Abbott says asylum seekers are "swarming Europe" and he is lobbying conservatives to adopt his controversial migration policies. But not everyone is convinced.

#Sydney got a mention in that OP #CorneliaRau article (Australian citizen illegally "detained" for ~ 10 months, first in a Queensland prison then #Baxter immigration detention centre - all while showing symptoms of serious mental illness.
#ImmigrationDepartment Secretary #BillFarmer assigned some responsibility and then given ambassadorship to #Indonesia, Minister #AmandaVanstone continued as minister.)
