More than 20 real estate properties in #Vienna may be auctioned off in favour of #Ukraine's state-owned gas company #Naftogaz. The company has secured compensation for losses caused by #Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea, according to the #Austrian newspaper #Der_Standard.
Following the 2014 annexation, #Ukraine demanded compensation from #Russia. In 2023, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in #The_Hague ruled in #Ukraine's favour,
and the decision can now be enforced. However, the procedure is not yet complete - the court ruling must first be officially delivered to #Russia. After that, #Moscow will have the opportunity to appeal the decision.
According to #Naftogaz's press release, the arbitral tribunal awarded the company $5 billion in compensation. The properties in #Vienna would cover only a small portion of that amount. The company estimates the value at €120 million.
"Similar legal proceedings are underway in other countries as well. Sooner or later, #Russia will pay for everything," #Naftogaz CEO #Serhii_Koretskyi said.
