So one of the big deals about Legend of Zang Hai is how it's shot on a live mic ie hot set because I keep finding refs on how much XZ worked on his enunciation etc and the audio engineering is really really good but not everyone in the cast availed themselves to the opportunity because I can hear the difference in waveforms when the ADR kicks in. And because they share many scenes together that's especially apparent with Zhang Jingyi. Anyway, I blame (undiagnosed) autism.

Also, god bless modern camera sensors so the show can also make a big deal about using natural lighting but after a certain point you kinda have to wonder about the in-universe reason for why a person would need so many frickin candles in a room.

@horusporus I wonder about this constantly in guzhuang dramas!

This extra info on ZHZ is piquing my interest, though, I have to say.

The ADR? I myself am new to the entire c-ent but it's pretty (auditorily) evident that they use ADR/dubbing extensively lol (one tell is how "clean" the track is). That's already interesting enough to me because a lot of other televisual industries nowadays tend to want to flex their budget in how much they low-key spend on having quiet sets (or how expensive their cast are that they're not budgeted to spend more hours at the studio) but I understand the historical ones persist for similar reasons as with Indian ones: consistency and the money vs time saved. Honestly I wouldn't have rabbitholed into this if not for the fact that I could spot the voices for wwx and lwj in cql are the exact same as the ones in the audio drama I've managed to listen to, lmao. This was funny to me because it was the exact opposite logic to Indian shows (where actor keeps their voice but someone else sings their songs lollll)

Anyway, zhz making a big deal about this technical point was definitely one reason why it shot up my to-watch list šŸ˜. But it's definitely an expensive production. You can see the money showing up everywhere, very prestige budget.

@horusporus I mean I’m interested in what the state of the art is for cdrama filming with a live mic and natural lighting. :) And in how much work XZ put in practicing his enunciation for that!

I’m very used to dubbing in cdramas, although it’s not like I watch enough of them to actually recognise any voice actors’ voices. šŸ˜… One piece of trivia I do know is that Ji Li (Nie Huaisang’s actor) was the only one of the CQL cast who had the requisite credentials to record his own vocals for the dub, so that’s his own voice you hear. But I only found that out after I watched the series.
