1/2 Hello World!

It's Finland calling!

Here, up in the North, you know, #Lapland, #ArcticCircle, reindeers, Santa Claus etc.

For the 3rd week, this is how the #weather is like in here. The #heat limit here is 25 °C.

Today yet another record was broken - it has been 19 days that the #temperature has been above 30 °C somewhere in #Finland. And tomorrow it'll be 20 since this map is for tomorrow afternoon.

Think #ClimateChange isn't real?

Well, think again.

2/2 Hello World!

It's #Finland updating, because the toot above went sort of viral.

Yesterday there was a new #temperature record for this summer in Oulu, in the north Finland, 32,6 °C.

The number of days with over 30 °C is now 20, and will grow at least to 22, because the #HeatWave continues in most of the country.

Here in the south coast where I am, it has started to ease. It's 10.30 AM and 23 °C, not 28 as it has been for weeks, PHEW!.

@HannaEsmeralda_ “Heathwave” sounds like something out of a Brontë novel.

@tomminieminen (But yes, I did took the h off!)
@HannaEsmeralda_
I read somewhere that reindeers at northern Finland are suffering of lack of water
And I think that the owners of reindeers are not able to do anything about it. Because reindeers are all over the forests they can't just bring way to the animals
@artomelaranta Yes, I read an article about this, too, and that, too, is just horrendous.
@HannaEsmeralda_
And I bet some of the owners just let them die. Government pays for the "damage" if I understand correctly
@artomelaranta Yes, they don't even bother. Because, yes, there would be ways to get water in some parts of the forests where at least some of the reindeers could get it, but no.
@HannaEsmeralda_
You are absolutely correct

@HannaEsmeralda_

Canada, like most of the world is drying out. Is drying out.

The trees, brush and soil are as dry as kindling. Every spark catches, every fire grows bigger.

The size of Canada's fires are hard to comprehend. Finland is proud of it's forests. Most forest in the world.

Finland has 👉 26 million Hectares of forest, and Finns would FIGHT to save them.

Canada has burned 👉 30 million hectares in 30 months 👈 👉 to the roots.

Earth Fire Alarms Are Ringing.
Deafening.

#climate

@kevinrns Yes, we've had pink sunsets all the way here for years during the Canadian forest fires.

About the forests in Finland, yes we have a lot. But sadly most of them are fields that will be turned into toilet paper. Only few % of our forests are natural forests. Like old forests with wide biodiversity range. ...and they want to make toilet paper out of them, too.

@HannaEsmeralda_

Its still burning massively.

More than five hundred fires, huge fires, some over 100,000 hectares, many with NO ONE to fight them. Hundred of fires with no one fighting them. Huge fires with no one fighting them.

Look at the purple, notice the sizes. Build carbon's replacement or we die together.

Its not - past tense. It is future disastrous.

CIFFC

@kevinrns Yes, it is horrendous. And happens around the world, too. For instance every summer in Greece. Finnish fire fighters often go aboard to help. Here forest fires aren't yet a big problem. Yes, they happen, but they are under control in a short time. But we shall see, when they no longer are not.

@HannaEsmeralda_

It is very hard to understand scale.

Canada's wildfires in 2023 produced 40% of 2023's total CO2

Here is a map in scale of the actual amount of burned ash and soil.
Destruction. There is no there there.

To understand the scale of fire in Canada in 2023 alone, Imagine everything inside the black box is burned trees on bare soil. No house standing, no office.

@kevinrns To a completely different matter:

Way to go Canada! I just noticed that the Norwegian broadcasting company posted that Canada will recognize Palestine in September!

https://mastodon.social/@NRKno_bot/114944303783575020

(Finland will not, because we sadly have a far right-conservative government with christian zionist in it. No matter, that most of the Finnish people would want that to happen.)

@HannaEsmeralda_

Thanks for the heads up.

Canada recognizes Russia, to put the "if conditions are met" into focus,Canada recognizes North Korea.

@kevinrns Yes. the condition part is a bummer, but at the same time I think it is also important that Starmer and you PM say out loud what needs to happen, and what all is wrong. It's harder for the Israeli government to continue with their populism and lies.

@HannaEsmeralda_

This is the official site of Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.

http://ciffc.net

The big 6.3 (July 30 2025) means 6.3 million hectares burned to date. 2023 was 17.6, 2024 was 7.5 million hectares.

2023 was estimated to produce 40% of world CO2 pollution.

this is the badly computed and mathematically correlated exponential #climatechange accelerant that #methane presents, about to be unbound and released in the far north.

@HannaEsmeralda_

not to mention all the other potential pathogens that were conveniently in freezer storage in nature's meat-locker since the last ice-age.

@rexi Yup, all the future zoonocies we don't yet know, and then what ever the past will bring.

Vast sums provide power to ‘buy every politician’ and delay action on climate crisis, says expert

@Npars01 Yes, the emergency rooms have been packed with old people here now. Some cities are opening icehalls so people can go there for cooling (Yes, we are an icehockey nation; there is ice in the icehalls in the summer, too.)

@Npars01 Well, in USA people with all ages are probably dying in various reasons because of the terrible healthcare system - I mean the price.

In Finland it costs for some tenners or max some hunderds of euros (if one has to stay several nights in a hospital.)

But we're having a far right - conservative government that is atm doing everything in their power to crush our public healthcare system. Their dream is to have it like in the USA; so that the poor will die.

@HannaEsmeralda_
Yes but not mix up weather and climate. Right now you have more sun and its (way to) warm, as it is in Germany.

I am still shiver about that change. Take care of plants and animals.

@ibrahim_cris Please do not mansplain. This is because of the climate change that we've been stuck in this kind of weather for WEEKS. Few days would be normal. Few weeks, not.

This has been confimed by the climate scientist.

@HannaEsmeralda_ Yes. the flow changed and yes its about too much co2 and methan in the air. But there is a chance that it will change when golf strom got lost.

However, it will be the new normal. And 33 Degree are better as 35 to 40 or over 50, like in theran or tukey.

Gender is unimportant. I just want to spread some hope. It may be better for few next years too.

Because heat is likely but you will have few normal years too.

@HannaEsmeralda_

We're also at the peak of the 11 years solar cycle, so the weather kind of had to be "a little bit off normal" anyway

This also means temperatures will go a bit down again over the next few summers, thus many will (again) claim that climate change is a hoax...

...while they blatantly ignore that the overall trend is increasing faster than ever when we're actually comparing apples to apples... 😔

(If the next solar peak beats this one, I'm SO moving back up north again...)

@HannaEsmeralda_

I think you may have misread my comment. I'm sorry for being unclear!

This absolutely IS due to climate change!

But there is some minor stuff on top of that again... which unfortunately causes people to _think_ it will get colder in the short term future... Even when the long term trend is still pointing up towards inevitable catastrophy...

(Fwiw)

@HannaEsmeralda_
No dispute regarding climate change - it's real.

However, Santa Claus lives in Canada.

@HannaEsmeralda_ Half of America agrees with you, the other half are ignorant and stupid

@HannaEsmeralda_ Getting roasted here the last few days as well. I don’t ever remember this level of heat and humidity in my entire life. We now have to contend with a swarm of new tick species and mosquito borne illnesses we were previously thought to be somewhat immune to… because it was too cold for those species.

It gets worse.I recently read Tuvalu is going to be the first nation to be evacuated because of climate change.

https://www.vice.com/en/article/this-entire-country-has-to-be-evacuated-because-of-climate-change/

We. Are. In. Trouble.

This Entire Country Has To Be Evacuated Because of Climate Change

The gorgeous Pacific island nation of Tuvalu will be the first country on earth to be consumed by rising sea levels caused by climate change.

VICE
@exostence Yes, we most certainly are.
@HannaEsmeralda_ It was always understood and is known since the 70s but it was ignored.
Friendly reasonable people thought they just had to explain it etc. . "Climate deniers" always were comfortable with people explaining, not resisting.
@HannaEsmeralda_ Yet, we humans chug along, quarreling, killing each other, poisoning the planet, fighting over our piles of gold, unable to see the forest because of the fires, as we burn our house down, and not much is said about it.
This seems to be our fate and if not the end times, it’s on the way to some very bad times. Expect there to be a lot less humans around because of our specie’s character. But will we have learned anything? I’m not prepared to say. 😔
