VPN use surges in UK as new online safety rules kick in https://archive.is/GWdx5

No shit, Sherlock!

incoming ban on VPN 3..2….1

Or worse every VPN user needs a KYC 🤔

@nixCraft I assume you do not mean Know Your Customer/Client. Clue please what KYC means in this situation.
Know your customer - Wikipedia

@nixCraft Oh... the instances of KYC I have encountered in computer programming revolve around requirements gathering, know what the customer (user) actually needs us to implement and test that works in a specific way. I didn't think about it from a financial standpoint and anti-laundering.
@wgarmil @nixCraft KYC is already in place in British telecoms - if you want to purchase a phone number in the UK (e.g. in Twilio), you need to fill out KYC data with regards to identity and address
@nixCraft yeah, good luck banning VPNs without whitelisting the whole Net. Russia and China are leagues ahead and even they can't beat it yet.
@nixCraft that will cause major issues. All enterprises use vpn
@nixCraft even if that happens, it's still not too hard to setup a Wireguard or better yet AmneziaWG VPN on a VPS for anyone with some networking knowledge. Although it's clearly less convenient, and definitely out of reach for the masses
AmneziaWG | Amnezia Docs

AmneziaWG is a fork of [WireGuard-Go], inheriting the architectural simplicity and high performance of the original implementation, but eliminating the identifiable network signatures that make WireGuard easily detectable by Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) systems.

@nixCraft Ban on mathematics incoming? 🤔😉

@nixCraft Wouldn’t it be a shame if someone put together a bunch of Ansible scripts that spun up your own almost untraceable VPN in the cloud? 🤔
Oh look. Oops…

Or maybe they’ll insist on KYC verification for SSH? 😁#sshTunnelling
