Good.
@nixCraft
at least in europe. korean government forces use of windows-only 'security sofwares' and chrome browser. linux desktop cant really access to gov sites.
@nixCraft looks all good except for Ubuntu 16.04; that's almost a decade ago

@kaito02 @nixCraft Suspect picture is really old

My bigger thing is someone buying a $20 computer in a thrift shop isn't concerned about most of the points mentioned.

I'd go with.

Runs great on older computers like this one.

Includes full featured Word processor and Spreadsheet programs.

Free updates to the software and operating system.

Access to a large library of free software.

@kaito02 Seeing that it also has LibreOffice 5.2 installed, it might very well be an old photo. LibreOffice is on version 25.2 according to their website.

@nixCraft

@kaito02 @nixCraft I think the picture is old. Today on a machine like that there would be less demanding distributions of Linux more appropriate than Ubuntu.

But to use a machine abandoned by Microsoft and the like is possible. There are use cases that demand more powerful CPU, GPU and more RAM, but common office, communication, calculating, or browsing needs can be done even with a decade old PC of working condition.

@kaito02 @nixCraft that PC has a Windows XP sticker on the front so it probably can’t run anything newer.

I just wouldn’t sell that PC at all. Someone who doesn’t know anything about computers might buy it and unknowingly run an unpatched web browser :/

@kaito02 @nixCraft I'm guessing this pic is probably a decade old too lol
@nixCraft I used to volunteer my time, doing exactly this for my oldl thrift shop.

@nixCraft
Good show.

I've thought about making a shop like that many times over the last few years.

@nixCraft Tim G. is doing god's work.
@nixCraft I used to volunteer with an organization that fixed up donated and salvaged PCs and installed Linux Mint on them.
@nixCraft wow 2gb of ram and ff - good fun! but yeah windows is definitely always a bad choice ... ;)
@nixCraft Tim G. is out there changing people's lives.
@nixCraft Buwahahah. Conquering the World, one used machine at a time.
@nixCraft Firefox isn't a browser?
@nixCraft My computer/laptop systems biz received so many older desktops and laptops as trade-ins or just given to us that I eventually created a nonprofit to take in old equipment to repair and upgrade for distribution to 17 regional nonprofits on our area. From local animal rescues, women's shelters, to Habitat for Humanity locations, we distributed hundreds. ALL with Linux UNLESS winblows was required. Even then, we'd install LibreOffice and other Open Source software where possible.
@nixCraft
I wish our local shops did this. But you never see PCs.. Monitors, keyboards, mice, gaming headphones, yes, but never a PC..

@nixCraft should’ve put a sticker with

“This station has been seized by the Linux gang”

@nixCraft - strictly speaking, the Windows license is granted ti the original purchaser of the computer, or whoever installed it. Not to computer itself. So for a 2nd hand computer to have a *legal* OS already on it, then a free Linux OS should be the default.
@bazcook @nixCraft Strictly speaking, fuck non-transferable licenses.
@chrisp @nixCraft - oh, yes - but I anticipate Microsoft is going to move the next OS to being strictly cloud-based, along with all their Office software already there. Then make it yearly subscription-based.
Your 'computer' will end up being just a dumb terminal - just like in the days preceding the Personal Computer, when everything relied on a distant mainframe to get stuff done.
Back to the Future.
@nixCraft Totally lilke this concept 👍 ❤️
@nixCraft that’s another list not saying “ready for the desktop”
