Definitely not the tax code system where I'm at, but I've had the same experience nevertheless. Layed off in 2021 and then again 2025. This time it took 5 months to get a new job, which was very disheartening.
I've talked to many designers and many in the same position were considering dropping out of this unreliable profession.
