1973: US Govt helps install Chilean dictator Pinochet

1987: Luis Leon survives torture at hands of Pinochet, escapes to USA, receives asylum

2025: ICE disappears Leon (now 82), lies to family that he's dead, he's actually in a Guatemalan hospital

He did everything right and legal, and ICE disappears him anyway. This is fascism through and through and anyone who supports this is complicit.

@QasimRashid And if you think these "deportations" (disappearings) are in any way "Christian"....
@MaierAmsden @QasimRashid actually a part of the Jewish Torah. Old Testament ethics, but I guess Christianity should probably include that principle.
@AndyDeardentsa @MaierAmsden @QasimRashid
Actually, Jesus covered this as well. When asked what was the most important commandment, he replied:
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” ~Mark 12:28-
@SeekTruth @AndyDeardentsa @MaierAmsden @QasimRashid I think he also answered the who is my neighbour with the good Samaritan parable. I.e. all humanity is your neighbour.
@QasimRashid I live in Chile and am married to a Chilean. When I told her about the deportations in the US her immediate response was “Oh, just like in Chile.” The US isn’t like Nazi Germany, yet, but it’s hard to see much of a difference between it now and Pinochet’s dictatorship.
@QasimRashid Just one more example of how ugly our country has become.
@QasimRashid Also drives home the point that the US's failure to fight its government's colonial efforts to install right wing dictators favorable to letting US corporations plunder their countries' resources throughout the 20th century doomed us to falling into fascism ourselves in the 21st. It had to happen here eventually because we largely ignored it while it was done to so many others in our names. No one who consumes products from major US companies that profited is without guilt.
@PedestrianError @QasimRashid the AFL-CIO was instrumental in this, especially in South and Central America, to the point that they had an office for CIA staff in their DC headquarters. “Fighting communism”, spreading businesses unionism, and paving the way for capitalist extraction is the entire reason that organization exists. Even the people that are supposed to advocate for us exist to oppress us.

@sambowne @QasimRashid

He was granted political asylum almost FIFTY years ago. But trump couldn't stand the fact that Leon didn't support a dictator friend of his so....

"The last time anyone in the family saw Leon was June 20, when he went with his wife to a Philadelphia immigration office to have his lost green card replaced.

There, the family says, he was handcuffed by two officers, who led him away without explanation."

@QasimRashid The more important question is not “is the US fascist?” but rather “what is the path to unfascism?”
@icanbob @QasimRashid America has always been fascist with a very lovely wardrobe designed to look like democracy. This country has never been “a great place that has made some mistakes”. It has always been a fascist operation to extract wealth from populations and regions deemed unfit/inferior.
@icanbob @QasimRashid and the definition of those who are unfit or inferior has changed to fit the narrative of the pretend democracy. it’s all about white supremacy, colonialism, and systemic oppression of peoples and populations to keep the flailing severed arms of the old European empires alive.
@icanbob @QasimRashid I should share a twitch channel where we had this discussion a few days ago: https://twitch.tv/seandablack

The reclusive plutocrat who became the biggest political donor of 2024

The largest donor of the 2024 presidential campaign, by far, is Timothy Mellon, the reclusive billionaire and heir to the Mellon banking fortune.

I read he died in the Guatemalan hospital

@Kelliko70

Can you support that with a link to some source?

@QasimRashid
issue is big enough, that i have to ask sources?

assuming correct. u.s. was already scary, one issue more scary.

i'm still little puzzled why ice cops go after old man, which is not big liability anymore.

@zetabeta @QasimRashid a catch is a catch and old people are probably easier to catch.

> why ice cops go after old man, which is not big liability anymore

My thought is that they have targets for the number of people they have to catch and they may well be catching the easiest to catch.
Like the Soviet Union in the 1930s, when the NKVD had targets for the number of spies they had to catch.

@zetabeta @QasimRashid

@QasimRashid Fuck Thatcher and the ground she’s rotting in! She may not have had a hand in this current situation, but she is responsible! She gave Pinochet a warm welcome. Mind you, Starmer seems to be sucking Netanyahu’s ‘member’…..
