Silicon Valley’s alliance with Donald Trump was a mask off moment and showed the world we can’t depend on US tech companies.

For the past few months, I’ve been trying to get off US tech and I put together a guide so you find alternatives too. I hope you find it helpful!

Getting off US tech: a guide

I’m in the process of dropping US tech services. Here’s how I did it, and options you should consider.

Disconnect

@parismarx

I realized this as well when I read the privacy policy for a video game made by Bandai Namco for the PS4. The thing read like absolute dreck. I noticed most of the protections afforded consumers come from EU laws. No mention of American laws. I thought to myself, "if you live in America, you're screwed."

@parismarx
I laughed when I saw the blog about making Libre Office look like MS Office: I can never find anything on the latter, on the rare occasions I have to look at it to help someoneelse solve a problem.
The ribbon menu alone is a great reason to abandon MS Office. Libre Office uses a sensible menu system.
@markhburton Maybe it's just that helps make it more approachable since I'm used to the MS Office experience. Perhaps I should just try the regular theme.
@parismarx
Anyway, I agree with many of your recommendations, especially Qwant for search.
UK users might consider

@parismarx Regarding the podcast thing; Antennapod is the only reason I regret switching from Android to iOS. Now I'm using the Automattic thing (it's called Pocket Casts and its OK'ish)

@parismarx

This is why I have been trying to generate a list of Digital Service Providers Outside U.S. Jurisdiction

https://codeberg.org/Linux-Is-Best/Outside_US_Jurisdiction

Outside_US_Jurisdiction

Digital Service Providers outside the jurisdiction of the United States of America.

Codeberg.org

@parismarx Good guide! 👍 a note: Startpage also offers email, appropriately named StartMail & it's really easy, even comes with a native Gmail importer.

Also, there are simple consumer NextCloud solutions to be found, e.g. The Good Cloud, which requires no self-hosting & come cheap, or even free.

Also, check out the Zen browser.

@jwcph Any other NextCloud suggestions? I'd be happy to add some to make it easier.
@parismarx TBH I never investigated further after I signed up via https://thegood.cloud/, installed the NextCloud app on my laptop & phone & realized that it's every single bit as easy & convenient as Dropbox 😁 I don't auto-sync photos (I took the opportunity for some digital hygiene) but I'm pretty sure the feature is available.
@parismarx this is a pretty nice guide, thanks.
canadian-alternatives

A collection of Canadian alternatives to common Internet services in the spirit of the various Awesome lists.

Worktree
@outofcontrol @Taffer That list is already included in the additional resources at the end!
@parismarx @Taffer Ha, I read through the entire post except the end. That’ll teach me!
@parismarx I came here to recommend some of the NextCloud hosting providers - in particular I use TheGood.Cloud, Switzerland based. (I realise being Swiss isn't magic, but their values seem pretty solid anyway.)
@arafel Is there a good list of NextCloud providers? I'd be happy to add it.

@parismarx I think I just looked at the list of providers on their site, https://nextcloud.com/partners/ - apparently long enough ago to forget TheGood.Cloud are Dutch, not Swiss. My mistake. 🙈

As far as I recall I tried one of the ones with a Platinum partner badge, reasoning they’d probably know the most. Only tried the one so I can’t vouch for the rest.

Nextcloud partners

Nextcloud collaborates with a diverse ecosystem of partners who build on, complement, and provide services around our platform.

Nextcloud
@arafel Oops, I should’ve found that. Thanks for the head’s up!
@parismarx @arafel I've been happily using @disroot 🇩🇪 for years as my provider for personal email, calendar, todo, files, and other Nextcloud things. Their free plan is perfect for personal use, and they have been very reliable for many years.

@famuvie @parismarx @arafel @disroot

I recently became a member as welll. I’m thinking of moving from Proton mail to @disroot

Glad to hear from a contented member.

@famuvie @parismarx @arafel happy to be at your service :)
@parismarx I think the proton person was a Trump supporter, at the very least he praised that administration
@parismarx This password keeper doesn't get enough attention: https://keepass.info
KeePass Password Safe

KeePass is a free open source password manager. Passwords can be stored in an encrypted database, which can be unlocked with one master key.

@parismarx This is a great article - very useful, thank you.

The only thing I'd add (subtract, actually) is not to bother with #PCloud. I tried it on MacOS and it didn't work effectively. When I tried to uninstall it I found that it requires a considerable level of technical knowledge to completely remove it from your computer. The software's developer doesn't offer effective uninstallation instructions.

@parismarx awesome, thanks for the list, sharing.

for privacy messaging cases (not saying you should add to your general purpose list, just FYI), I know as I helped co-found it, @cwtch is Canadian, and I'm fairly confident @briar is not american but cannot confirm

@parismarx the glaring one you overlooked is Substack! paywall, leveraging anyone to create content in echo chambers with no moderation , promoting outrage and polarisation for profit.
@amirbkhan No, you just wrote this before reading.

@parismarx ah, I apologise. I stand corrected. Was not being rude by the way. It’s a very comprehensive and useful list. So thank you. particularly glad you mentioned Anytime player which I’ll use for podcasts now.

I’m just so ticked off with Substack who take zero effort to moderate or flag derogatory and offensive content coming from right-wing so called “independent journalists”. I’m losing dear friends who’re stuck in such an echo chamber. Just feeling heartbroken 💔

@parismarx A caveat.It's NOT about "US tech".

It's about "large corporations who WILL lick fascist scrote at the slightest provocation".

Including the Yurpian ones, which have also a time-honored tradition of doing just that.

@parismarx I'm excited for someone to show you around Linux! I've been using Ubuntu since 2008 and recently switched to Mint, and the developments over the years has been incredible.
@parismarx I just read that you've had it with Microsoft. Are you going to be shown around Linux sooner?

Let me add one more recommendation: disroot

"Disroot is a platform providing online services based on principles of freedom, privacy, federation and decentralization. No tracking, no ads, no profiling, no data mining!"

They offer email, cloud, file sharing and much more. Donation funded. Based in Amsterdam.

@parismarx any specific reason Bitwarden didn't make it onto your list for password managers?
