looking for opinions here

I want to move my email/cloud storage away from big tech (google, microsoft), and the best option I could find at this point that combines both is Proton... For people that have used it, how is it? would you recommend something like Mail Plus? (can't get unlimited yet, sadly)

if you can't recommend or don't like it, do you know of any alternatives that combine both email and cloud storage? or at least a combo that gets you around the same price as Mail Plus? thank you

thank you everyone for the suggestions!!! I think I'll go with both Tuta and Filen for now, it helps that they both have native apps for linux when compared to Proton (even though I plan to use thunderbird for the former)
@anubiarts before you jump fully to tuta, give it a try for a week or so. i found the interface on both linux and android to be terribly sluggish, sadly. i had really hoped to migrate to tuta from proton.
@hobbsc ohh, got it!! thank you for the tip
@anubiarts thunderbird doesnt work with tuta for some stupid reason they make you use their own client
@anubiarts Good stuff. Tuta are on Mastodon as well.
@anubiarts I use Proton (I only really use the email part of it, although I used their drive feature briefly once) but Tuta seems to be working on a similar encrypted storage service.
@anubiarts it's been perfectly fine - the calendar is nowhere near what i need (paying for shared calendars is a joke) but everything else is alright. i just use mail plus as well.
@anubiarts I've used Proton in the past but currently use Tuta
@anubiarts I have a free Proton account that I use occasionally. I prefer @mailbox_org that has a standard account for 30€ with 10gb for email and 5gb for storage (more can be added). Email uses IMAP and storage only with webdav
@anubiarts so personally i don't use proton at all so i can't say if it's good or bad but if you ever don't like it there are alternatives such as Next cloud (FOSS) and self hosting if you know what you're doing

@bulqa I've considered nextcloud, but self hosting and managing servers is something I can't really do

I can deal with fixing things on my distro if something goes wrong, but I definitely can't do it for my backup files, those are ones I dont' wanna lose in case I do a mistake

@anubiarts @filen seems to be pretty good for cloud storage. Even has an app so you can sync photos and files from your phone.

@Tutanota is a good call though. Email and calendar.

@fluffgar after looking at all the options everyone suggested I think I'll go with these 2!! thank you!
@anubiarts I wouldn't recommend subscribing to Mail Plus unless you own a domain name.

4.99€/month or 47.88€/year is a lot of money for just 15 GB of storage and 10 email addresses. At least with a custom domain you'd have
effectively unlimited addresses (catch-all).
What is a catch-all email address? | Proton

A Catch-all email address provides Proton Mail custom domain users the option to receive all mail sent to their domain.

Proton

@anubiarts I’ve found the encryption of Proton mail to make the experience slower and less polished than Gmail , particularly around search.

If your goal is to move off of big tech and to a company that does not sell your data but not necessarily be encrypted, I’ve been very happy with Fastmail.

IMO. email encryption protonmail style isn’t worth it anyways because the metadata isn’t encrypted (who you’re talking to and the subject lines of every email) nor is the copy held by the person you sent it to so it’s still out there. For things you want to be secure against government access, use signal.

@anubiarts I don't have a big opinion on them, I just know that they just vanish emails sent from my mail server. Might be a slight misconfiguration on my part. But Google accepts them. Which is usually the harder to reach server IMO.
@anubiarts i recommend @Tutanota and @mailbox_org

biggest downside for me is both dont offer JUST email. i dont want any cloud stuff. otherwise both are fine options and fine people
@anubiarts You can try https://mailbox.org/ it offers mail, an office suite, and cloud storage.

@anubiarts I stopped paying for proton when they added AI stuff to it. I heard a lot about tuta from people migrating away from proton
@gkrnours Tuta is unfortunately only a step behind in this regard ): https://mastodon.art/@enriquericos/114845745048290364

@eishiya how can they be so bad at reading the room? I only heard of tuta from people leaving proton behind because of the AI stuff. And of all their options, they go for grok
@anubiarts i'm sorry that i can't help when it comes to a combo, but the best file storage service i've tried is filen
i'm not sure if you need premium features on email, but mostly i use a free account on tuta and proton (have used proton less due to slowly losing trust on them) and then filen for cloud storage
@anubiarts Protonmail's CEO is a big Trump supporter so it may inevitably fall to the same fate Google is, but it's a very good service that I used for a while I'd recommend it.
@anubiarts
Used proton for a while with no issue before the CEO went off about how Trumps going to fight big tech (would love to hear what he's thinking now). Looked into tuta but the apps were just crummy web apps and the most common email traffic can only really be encrypted between you and their server, kind of defeats the purpose of end to end encryption when the provider receives your emails unencrypted. Been using disroot.org most of the year now, been a nice simple provider that gets most funding through donation. They also host a nextcloud instance for other general cloud services not sure what the free storage amount is since I already host my own.

@anubiarts I honestly don't recommend Proton, they will give your data to police.

Email company under fire over police data handover

The encrypted-email service has just recruited web founder Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

@anubiarts I have a proton email in the free tier but been slowly moving my stuff from it to tuta since the whole pro-trump thing.

I also only use their free tier but their paid plans are cheaper than proton. For storage I use koofr, which seems trustworth so far(but I keep up with their TOS changes in case anything bad eventually shows up).

You can get Tuta's android app via f–droid too, which in my opinion is a huge plus.

The calendar app I use is completely offline, its fossify calendar.

@anubiarts I've been using ProtonMail for the past 4 years without paying a single cent and it works at it should. Just a mail service that encourages privacy.
@anubiarts maybe I'm late to the party, but I would recommend @runbox, being using their mail service for years already
@mdkcore @anubiarts Thank you for being part of the Runbox community!
@anubiarts I like it, but I think the best thing you can do is check out the free tier to get a feel for it.
