What I keep coming back to is the fact that the people for whom Epstien's crimes have become a point of fracture with Trump are simply not people who care at all about crimes like rape.

I say that because it's the same group of people who always second guess victims, who don't think "date rape" is real rape, who might say they want to "protect girls" but don't care if the girl is a teen as they decide she's "fast."

I guess if they imagine a "perfect victim" they do care?

@futurebird That's part of why they do the mental gymnastics to blame the victim -- they don't want to have to care, because then they would actually have to do something. Only when a "perfect victim" is presented are they finally willing to think about maybe acting if they have to.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s because they actually care… I think that in their minds the Epstein list will be full of proof of how awful and depraved those ‘holier than thou Dems’ are. They are convinced that liberal America is a satan worshipping cesspool: they were convinced that releasing the files would finally prove it and now they are being denied their victory. It’s all about owning the libs.

@DavidM_yeg @futurebird That's it. That's the reason. And Trump's response made it absolutely clear that there is something bad*) on him in the file, and that it why it is being suppressed. I disbelieved Elon when he made this claim (because, Elon), but now I must agree with him.

*) Though it's a mystery what that could be, Trump being immune to scandals, cf. Access Hollywood.

@DavidM_yeg @futurebird Very much this. "Guilt", as a state and property, doesn't require those objecting to start considering "guilty of what?" in any way. It's the distinction of nature between "elect" and "unelect".

Put differently, shifting them to an alternative narrative is possible, but only by specific means over enough time. That's not what's been done, so the actions that look like a coverup interact with the established narrative in a negative way.

what stands out to me is that the news industry keeps trying their damndest to turn the public eye to something else, anything else. They are very obviously every bit as terrified of the epstein thing as trump is. Maybe even more terrified.

They keep calling it a "conspiracy" (derogatory) and while there are conspiracies about the details that are fantastical and silly, Ms. Maxwell was convicted. There is nothing crazy or fringe about thinking that there is something being buried from the public.

In that way it is a conspiracy in the classical sense.
