So one thing I disturbingly did not hear during the NLS presentation is assurance that its funding is secure… And that’s the one thing I was hoping to hear. I mean, they mentioned NEWSLINE, but I’ve always thought most of us have moved on from that given the greater proliferation of other accessible news sources, though I suppose its specialized content is a thing as well as its benefit for seniors and some low income folks. #NFB25
@AuroraNebulosa So the NLS is part of the Library of Congress which is within the Legislative branch and is funded directly through The legislative Branch appropriations process which is not subject to any Executive branch approvals. The entire LoC last year had a budget of<$900M and is requesting about $950M for the next fiscal Year.
@dhamlinmusic So, why didn’t NLS representatives simply come out and say this? Surely they know we are all most concerned about it. #NFB25
@AuroraNebulosa My guess would be they cannot talk about ongoing budgetary talks, Legislative appropriations are still ongoing with no final numbers
@AuroraNebulosa Additionally the House and Senate committees that deal with this are in disagreement over, funding, the House is suggesting a nearly $90M cut from current levels, whereas the Senate is proposing funding close to current levels.
