'Knowing Steam players are hoarders explains why you give Valve that 30%,' analyst tells devs: 'You get access to a bunch of drunken sailors who spend money irresponsibly'

"More than likely the person buying your game is not going to play it."

@scalzi Objection! I have every intention of playing them, and I swear I'll get around to it. Someday.
@woe2you @scalzi I'm following the same principle. And it would work fine if new games were not being released. I used to play Overwatch 2 almost religiously every day. Then Marvel Rivals arrived and now I play both. Then Doom The Dark Ages came and I was playing that too. Managed to finish it and went to play RoboCop Rogue City (amazing game btw) that I again barely fit between MR and OW2. And I still have Dying Light 2 to finish. Also I bought Stray coz I've really wanted it for long...
@woe2you @scalzi And I also have Little Nightmares 2 to play that I just grabbed because I absolutely loved the first one so much. It's not that I just don't play games, it's hard to fit the play time with other games and time I need to spend at work. Days just don't have enough hours and it suuucks so much.
@rejzor I love Stray. I started it recently for YouTube but nobody watched it so I'll probably finish it on my own time.
@woe2you You should try G-Force. It's an older game, almost like Splinter Cell or Metal Gear Solid, but with guinea pigs. It's actually really good and cute with similar perspective as Stray.
@rejzor I'll check that out. I've also been recommended Little Kitty, Big City

@scalzi truly, I share your outrage.

But my kid actually plays all my Steam games, so at least they’re not just taking up disk space. 😎

@scalzi I am the same, but for books, and magazine/newspaper subscriptions. But as it happens, just some hours ago I finally beat the FOMO and cancelled my ft.com subscription. Sure, I love the paper, but I wasn't reading it enough to justify paying €45/mo. (Had been paying that much for only maybe half a year, earlier I had managed to get some much more affordable subscription.)

@scalzi Me a drunken sailor?!

Oh, you got me

@scalzi The tsundoku is real. Besides, the worst outcome is I’m shoveling a bit of money at someone who made a thing I think is neat. Actually playing the game later is a bonus.

@scalzi I use all my willpower to buy games on Steam only at that moment when I actually want to play them.

Since there is no willpower left afterwards I naturally need to spend hours scrolling YouTube shorts.

"time is money, friend!"
@scalzi #HumbleBundle was a massive weakness for a time - I would say 90% of my Steam library has never been played, about the same will never be played, and most of the games I HAVE played were installed, tried for a few minutes, and then uninstalled.Actually, come to think of it, I bought a Sonic The hedgehog bundle years ago, and introduced my daughter to them a couple of mopnths ago, and now she is obsessed, so that is a cheap win - but yeah, most of the games wil never be played.
@scalzi I worked in a casual games publisher a decade ago and this is 100% accurate, it was all about the whales; most players spent nothing, whales bought everything.
@scalzi I've been trying to dial back my purchases for exactly the reasons in the article, but I still fall for sales occasionally
