Tiny Mastodon Tip About Quote Posts 📢

If your instance is already running the newly released version Mastodon 4.4,

Know that in preparation for the full implementation, the team has included a consent setting for the upcoming Quote Post feature.

While quoting a post will not
be available as a native feature until Mastodon 4.5 later this year, it's wonderful that you can adjust if you want in or not before it even arrives!

HOW TO❓

1. From the web interface, go to "Preferences" on the right-side menu. Then click on "Other" under the "Preferences" section

2. If your instance was newly updated, you should now see an option in "Posting Defaults" for "Who can quote" (see image below) 👇

Note: If the option isn't there, your instance has not updated to the version including it yet. Be patient, it will likely be added in the weeks to come.

3. From the "Who can quote" drop-menu, you can choose either "Everyone", "Followers and mentioned users", or "Only mentioned users"

4. Once the next version is released, you will be ready for Quote Posts! No matter your choices 💪

5. Enjoy the freedom of choosing the features you wish to participate in (or not)! 😌✨

@Em0nM4stodon I know it's a controversial feature, but I'm glad this feature is being added for it was a blocker on some people's adoption of the fediverse. I'm also glad that they've added consent features before the feature itself drops.

One less excuse for people to value corpomedia and embrace real social communities. 😎

@Em0nM4stodon An important note was forgotten, this option whether quoted posts are allowed or not, only applies within the software mastodon, all other Fediverse services can (and always could) continue to make quoted posts, no matter what mastodon users set or not.

This is a function of the other Fediverse services that have always been available.
I use #Calckey to access the Fediverse

Mastodon has always displayed quoted posts, they just come from the other services

I didn't know that they always showed quote posts.

I thought only since the current release.

I did know that other Fediverse platforms offer more options than Mastodon (such as making quoted posts).

@paulschoe Mastodon does mastodon things and even Pixelfed posts look like it's mastodon there :(

Quoted posts have always been going with the #Misskey family, but no one cared until now because MASTODON

But many other services have always been able to use quoted posts for over a decade.

@Em0nM4stodon will be interesting how and if Eugen strongarms the other softwares of fedi to respect this.

Though it might happen. I just really hope he thought about cooperating on this with other software so it actually can work.

As I see it, there are 3 uses for QP.
Adding AltText.
As an alternative to screenshotting a troll / similar post.
Avoiding the need to click through to another instance to read.

@AnguaDelphine Well I guess you need some felt "safety features" when dealing with "normal" internet folks.

It is not that hard to have a good experience on fedi but surely you need to treat it differently than bluesky/twitter

I mean yeah QP can be used for dogpilling no problem, but thats risk you might assume when posting something in public.

But mastos feature will be very teethless if it can't be enforced on other servers.

Exactly.
I rarely use it myself.
The main use I see on 'key is people sending each other up in good humour.
I have a backup on akkoma, similar there.

There's GoTo Social & Friendica, I forget if they use it and the newer Ice.Net which is half Masto I think.

@AnguaDelphine it will surely depend on your bubble. I rarely use them as well. Mostly as a fancy way to "link" a post with a nice preview or something.
