#Bangladesh is single largest source of EU seeking migrants out of #Libya.

For years the country's have vacillated on policies, with Libyan military banning all Bangladeshi arrivals in 2017, and then agreements signed by Libyan officials on camera publicly seeking "educated" #Bangladeshis to migrate and perform work in the country.

A group of over 160 that recently repatriated back to Bangladesh had their transport covered by the #European Union., whose International Organization for Migration (#IOM) Voluntary Humanitarian Return program has paid to send hundreds of them back home.

The IOM’s #Displacement Tracking Matrix, highlights that around 95% of Bangladeshi migrants leave for economic reasons, 98% of them are males, with nearly 70% of them claiming #unemployment pushed them to desperation out of their homeland.

in 2024 authorities counted nearly 4,000 Bangladeshis without legal papers arriving to #Italy in a 60 day period. The IOM has said in past decade it has facilitated the return of over 100,000 migrants that came to #EU via Libya alone.

In past 24 hours, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced #Greece will suspend #asylum hearings for any migrants arriving by boat from Libya and Italy has said it will provide boats to Libyan Coast Guard to curb EU seeking migrants.
