This is the ship we get around in. It's a bit special and very comfy. I'm used to smaller ships so the scale of it can be a little daunting. For sure it's a nice place to come home to after a few hours of walking about the rocks and avoiding crocs on shore.
The geology of the Kimberley region is absolutely fascinating. These trips are always better with a dedicated geologist on board to get excited about geological time frames.
This vignette of geology and flora is quintessential to my Kimberley experience. The sandstone is so ancient, the remnants of former uplift now weathered down to a thin layer. Big rocks become small rocks. Small rocks become sand. The spinifex grass survives and thrives in this nutrient poor environment, it's needles coated with resin to keep in the moisture and keep out the grazers.
New growth after the bushfire.

Rock Fig.
Most of my macro shots from this series are captured on the LUMIX S9 with a 100mm Macro, but this moment was with the G9II and 100-400mm telephoto instead. You can still get some lovely bokeh without a macro lens :)

Sometimes the rock is the art. We were visiting a sneaky little Gwion Gwion art site and the light was dancing with the rocks. The folks who live up this way ask that people do not share images of the rock art itself, whether that be Wandjina or Gwion Gwion or other.

Walking through scrub in search of rock art. I found myself spending more time with the flowers and butterflies. The art has been there for thousands of years, yet the butterflies are momentary visitors!

I love the hues of the Kimberley bush. They are not loud or raucous, but gentle and earthy. I feel calm here.

On these voyages I try to make sure the ship itself is a feature of the photography. And why not. It's our home away from home. It's what makes such a journey possible. We step out into the wilderness for a few hours at a time, then return to the safety and comfort of our steel hull.
It's a little bit surreal.
