Reading All Quiet on the Western Front for the first time felt like getting hit by emotional shrapnel. I expected a war novel, but what I got was a raw, haunting portrayal of humanity unraveling in the trenches.

One scene, in particular, stayed with me is the moment Paul stabs a French soldier in a shell hole. It’s brutal, yes, but what broke me was everything that followed. Paul’s desperate attempts to save the man he just killed, speaking to him, apologizing, humanizing him after the act. That sequence isn’t just tragic, it’s unbearable in its honesty.

Remarque doesn’t glorify war; he strips it down to bone and mud, showing us the psychological torment and the fragility of empathy in a world designed to crush it.

This isn’t just a war novel. It’s a eulogy for a generation.

It’s not easy to put into words the pain carried by that scene, but you did so with a sensitivity that’s deeply moving. What you said about empathy being crushed amid the mud and death… it hurts because it’s true. Thank you for reminding us that behind every uniform, there was a human story.
My father used to tell me stories of wars, some of them in trenches; I haven’t forgotten them.
@silver.vlax Thank you so much for this deeply moving comment. What you shared about your father’s stories and the memories they left behind really resonated. It’s a powerful reminder that history isn’t just dates and battles, it’s lived moments, pain, resilience, and the people who carry those echoes forward. If your father served, please know I’m deeply grateful for his service and yours, in carrying his stories. I’m honored the post connected with you in that way.
My great-grandfather was in the military. He used to share those stories with my father, and my father passed them on to me. One of my brothers also served as a soldier. Honestly, I’m the one who should be thankful... While many of us live behind worlds of fantasy, wrapped in stories and everyday dramas, others are out there giving their lives in harsh realities. I feel compassion for those who rush to take sides and see war as the first option. I believe those who choose sides so quickly likely wouldn’t survive a war—maybe wouldn’t even have half the courage to give their lives in one. But if you are—or were—a soldier who served, you have my deepest respect. I’m glad I came across your post.
@silver.vlax Was your great grandfather a veteran of The Great War? I would love to hear his stories. As for your brother, he has my respect and I hope he is okay, if so, has he told you any war stories?

While it's true that most live behind worlds of fantasy and drama and gossip, I think it can have its benefits (except the drama and gossip, I don't agree with it 😂) but I don't think the generations of now would survive if the world was to ever go back into a conflict like this again.
My grandfather didn't participate directly, but he did live between the two wars. He was a soldier in a neutral territory. Still, he has interesting stories. My brother was fine, his time was farther from those events, hehe, but he did go through a rather complicated situation where several of his comrades lost their lives in an accident. But he had been discharged weeks before. If that hadn’t happened, he probably would have died.
@silver.vlax Wow, those stories, I can imagine. If you don't mind me asking, where was he stationed? I'm sorry for what happened to your brother's company. I'm glad he's okay, does he have survivors guilt?
@silver.vlax We are too picky, we live in a world where you must pick a side and it's a dangerous mindset. A lot show no empathy or humanity anymore. I have never served, I wanted to enlist when I was fresh out of highschool but I didn't because, it's a silly reason but I didn't want to cut my long hair 😂. I do have family that are in the military/been My brother is a marine and my cousin in a field medic in the army.
I wanted to join the aviation squadron hahaha but I couldn't.
