I've been working on the website for the WFSA - the World Freestyle Skateboarding Association - for the best part of a year.

It has become very apparent that next to no one knows what #RSS is these days (or realises that it still exists), and I think that needs to change - so this is now on the sidebar for every article on the site.

RSS is the most useful tool possible for getting away from the "siloification" of the internet. It needs to be more widely used!

@coldkennels url pls

@marisa Of course! https://wfsafreestyle.org/

It's mostly just contest results right now - we're right in the peak of contest season and it is EXHAUSTING

@coldkennels You might know this already, but you can easily get an RSS feed from any Mastodon account, an excellent feature. Yours would be https://mastodon.social/@coldkennels.rss
@legofwoofus I did know that, and it's very cool! I'm a big fan of that.
@coldkennels well done Tony! It's not enough to include "the WiFi icon" on your site anymore, we need to actively hype RSS. I'll have to add a chiron to my site.

@shom make sure you also include a properly modern set of share buttons.

Almost everyone else involved in this project thinks I'm mad. I didn't want to do anything on Instagram, but I got outvoted. Annoyingly, it's still responsible for about 50% of our referrals. Urgh.

@coldkennels I don't have any share buttons on my personal site but I understand why organizations want to do that. Funnily though, your screenshot doesn't have Instagram as an option, you rebelling? 😂
@shom yeah, fuck Instagram. Fuck it with a giant shovel. Awful, awful platform.
@coldkennels the amount of harm to kids they're knowingly and willing to do is just unconscionable. I really don't like it when people see me with my camera and ask for my Instagram. I have to try hard to not rant at strangers.
@coldkennels This is extremely cool and an idea more sites ought to implement (including us!). #RSS
@rssboard Out of interest, do you have some sort of repository/list of recommended readers I could link to? I didn't want to link to a random Verge article, and my reader of choice (Vienna) is Mac-only.

@coldkennels We don't have a current #RSS directory but should explore bringing one back. OpenRSS has an interesting list that's too technical for new folks but has a lot of good information.

@rssboard Goddamn, yeah, that's thorough! Definitely overwhelming for most people new to RSS.

From what I've seen in trying to encourage people to adopt RSS, all they really care about at the core are
- what platforms can I use this on?
- will my feeds stay in sync if I use the same reader on multiple devices?
- how much does it cost?

The rest is really just power-user stuff - and if someone cares about that, they likely don't need a list like this anyway - they'll already know where to look.
