Why is it so difficult for people to understand who is truly responsible for USA’s demise?

You only have to witness the gnashing of teeth at Zohran Mamdani winning NYC mayoral primary from Democrats to understand that there’s no us and them when it comes to the poison that is US politics.
It's not that difficult to understand, but the way forward isn't to allow fascist to take over and kill more people. It's to keep them out and vote in people like Mamdani to replace the aging party members and actually work towards the type of government we want.

Firstly NZ has an entirely different electoral system. In your hypothetical scenario MMP allows a vote against either mainstream party to be counted and validate your opposition to the policies of either party in promoting the proportional representation of those policies you support in parliament.
Secondly, many American’s voted for Greens or independents running against the genocidal policies of both Democrats and Republicans but the US political system is sadly rigged against democracy.
I am certainly not advocating for not taking part in the electoral process simply pointing out that blaming those who didn’t vote for Democrats as being responsible for Trump is a failed argument when the actions of the Democrats themselves is what’s responsible for this outcome.
BTW, I have never voted for National, ACT or NZ First and haven't voted for Labour for nearly 2 decades now but I've also never not voted.

My takeaway is that the Dems need a propaganda apparatus no less fearsome than the right wing talk radio circuit; but they don't seem to have identified the problem, if they thing a single "Rogan of the left" will do the job.

Even if you think the choice is between the lesser of two evils - you always select the lesser.
My hope is - and this sounds callous but -I hope what goes on in America right now will wake up many of the increasing non-voters in my own country and show - votes matter.
It might not seem to matter terrible much any singular election, but election after election will add up.
2024 wouldn't have happened if votes were different in 2016 and if some of the many other between 16 and 24 had been different.
