Good news! For the first time, #Linux desktop breaks through 5% share in USA OS market as per Statcounter https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/united-states-of-america

Oh, absolutely, Microsoft, please, by all means, continue with your grand experiments like Recall Spyware, deleting email accounts in far-flung corners of the globe or stealing data for AI training. Rest assured, these brilliant strategies will have absolutely no bearing on Win11 desktop adoption. None whatsoever. We thank you from Linux HQ. Lmao.

Meanwhile: Microsoft to cut about 4% of jobs (9000 engineering talents) amid hefty AI bets. This was announced hours ago https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-02/microsoft-to-cut-9-000-workers-in-second-wave-of-major-layoffs this job cut help offset rising spending on AI infrastructure/investments and reflect a greater push to use AI tools internally, according to an analyst with Bloomberg.
Microsoft to Cut 9,000 Employees in Second Layoff Wave (MSFT)

Microsoft Corp. began job cuts that will impact about 9,000 workers, a second major wave of layoffs this year as it seeks to control costs.

@nixCraft

Well... Let's say that molotov cocktails do have their use

@h3artbl33d @nixCraft sounds cool, hand one over.

@delighted @nixCraft

If you throw them at big tech and clouds - I will gladly share my collection and brew up some more

@h3artbl33d @nixCraft sure will. Can help doing some brewing too!

@delighted @nixCraft

Big tech needs to burn. If you feel like we, Exquisite, can do a better job, don't hesitate to contact me (or us).

Threads (or rather Meta in its entirety) is not only suspended at our Mastodon, we block their entire netspace in pf.conf

@h3artbl33d @delighted @nixCraft

I agree big tech sucks and needs to be replaced, as huge FOSS Proponent and dev I say this. But I'm not a fan of violence and motolov cocktails either, rather building alternative economies using FOSS.

@BeaverGEGLChamp @delighted @nixCraft

Yeah - big tech definitely needs to be replaced. Open source is one of the building blocks required, but most certainly not the sole one.

The molotov cocktail was a figure of speech - I do not condone violence.

I do think, however, that we won't get to a better world by merely building alternatives. There needs to be awareness and an incentive. Fortunately, big tech is doing a very, very good job at creating that incentive themselves.

@nixCraft Yep.

No more human programmers or protagonists if they can possibly help it. From now on, MS only makes AI and AI advocacy propaganda.

Even Windows and Office are just hosts for CoPilot and Recall now.

@nixCraft The Year of Linux on Desktop is creeping in.
@AubreyDeLosDestinos @nixCraft It's only been a few short decades since the first year of linux on the desktop... ;-)

Global Slime Industries

@ellenor2000

How in the world did that end up happening??

@nixCraft

@nixCraft It's only 2% here in the UK. #Meh

@BackFromTheDud @nixCraft Yeah, only 2.8% here in Canada as well 😩(up from 1.75%)

That all being said, it's not great for Microsoft that their share has gone from 68.7% to barely over 61% in one year... people are clearly fleeing Windows here in Canada.

@nixCraft Has Netcraft confirmed it?
@nixCraft big penguin is out to get ya, Microsoft :3

@nixCraft

The number's certainly higher than what's recorded. I identify as win10 pc, and I know I'm not the only one.

Funnily enough, my phone identifies as a linux desktop, so it evens out :^D

@lxskllr out of curiosity: what do you run said phone?

(this written on Tooter- beta for SailfishOS)

@dryak

Just stock motorola android. Aside from their abysmal update policy, I really like motorola phones, and the near vanilla rom. The features they add, I find useful for the most part.

All the google stuff's been disabled, and my browser is fennec-fdroid. My ideal phone would be gnu/linux, perhaps with a vm that would run android apps. There's a few I need for work, and while something could probably be hacked together, I'm getting old, and not too smart. It's easier running what's given

@lxskllr Re: Ideal phone -- Note that SailfishOS is litterally that.

But yeah, the commercial support license is only available on a couple of phones (a couple of Sony models and a custom Reedeem -the Jolla C2).

@lxskllr

I came here to say much the same. If you turn on "resist fingerprinting" in Firefox, as I do, your browser says you're running Windows, which I don't. πŸ˜„

@nixCraft

@nixCraft As much as I hate Microsoft I don't wish for anyone to suffer because of them, even if that means more Linux.
@nixCraft am finally part of a good statistic for once 😁
@nixCraft Linux only got 4% share in August of 2024, so it gained 1% in less than a year

@cubeofcheese @nixCraft

Chaos Theory suggests that previously stable systems dependent on lots of data values can flip dramatically if relatively small changes in input data occur.

In this case, "OS market share as counted on the internet" those changes in input data values could be a new version of Windows, a new USA president, a new trade war where those you thought of as friends turn into enemies.

@nixCraft so it's not because Linux got any better, it's because competition got much worse, do I read this right?
@infosecdj @nixCraft linux is better, but people fears changing to a good choice based on windows fanboys propaganda

@infosecdj @nixCraft

Linux has gotten a lot better in recent years even as Microsoft is enshittenfying their platform. Both of those things can be true.

@infosecdj @nixCraft Linux has gotten steadily better over the years and windows has become winblows at an alarming rate. Windows 7 was the last version that didn't totally suck

@nixCraft

Why are β€œOS X” and β€œmacOS” shown separately? Those are different versions of the same operating system. πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

@argv_minus_one @nixCraft More to the point, the name change happened all the way back in 2016. Why is "OS X" still much bigger than the very recent uptick from zero of "Macos"?
@nixCraft ...or returning (-2)^2==-1...
@nixCraft Wow feels like just yesterday that it hit 4% and that took almost a decadr
@nixCraft still posting on Facebook? Yup, you are.
year of the linux desktop
@nixCraft I stopped spoofing my user agents a couple of years ago to bump up the numbers. Now there are a few more Linux and BSD machines on the books.
@nixCraft awesome! that 5% will most likely be from the Steam Deck, so I can be thankful to Valve for that :)
@nixCraft From my perspective as a former IT professional for 34 years, and a Microsoft Retail Partner, etc. is why there is anything above about a 10% adoption rate of an overpriced bunch of crap.
@nixCraft YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP!!!!!!!!!!!!
@nixCraft Turns out, no one gives a shit about Linux adoption in the US. The rest of the world has already begun moving on from Micro$oft-Mossad. The tail will no longer wag the dog.
@nixCraft
Current Mac user. My next compy will definitely be a linux.
Sadly most of them have to run systemd distributions.
@nixCraft You'd expect people would naturally embrace new version, but between Microsoft's own enshitification of Win11 and stupid arbitrary hardware requirements that rule out systems that would otherwise be capable of running Win11, Microsoft is spitting in their own bowl. Win11 gained some market share after MS forced people to upgrade, not because they wanted Win11. And they are too stupid and too pushy to realize.
Microsoft is a Platinum member of the Linux Foundation since 2016.
