When they lead with cruel jokes, they do not stay jokes for long. This is really happening.

Certainly I know that. It's precisely why I know how upsetting and disturbing it is for you, because I know that you know that, too. Something like that invokes a fight-or-flight response, but you've already said you can't flee (damn, I remember some things). Fighting is not something that comes naturally to us, though, we're pacifists.

I did say I was trying to take a day off from this for mental health, and I appreciate the reminder. It is *extremely* upsetting. I have rarely been brought to tears by news.

My wife cried when Trump was FIRST elected, and she's more neurotypical than the two of us. She's way past crying now.

In that situation, I am like you were with that post. I try to talk to her because I need her to acknowledge it, need her to help motivate me to do what comes next, for our survival.

I guarantee plenty of those 65 million have had family in this country (and before it ever was a concept) long before hers ever showed up to lord over everyone. Where is this conservative cunt's male guardian? She needs more supervision and perhaps some time in a room that locks from the outside like supply side God intended.

@hosford42 @fightfascism My father was a child when the fascists launched the failed coup that started the Spanish Civil War. The fascists had been <years> using that kind of rhetoric. My father spent years of his life in a refugee concentration camp in Southern France. To me the lesson is clear: when the fascists start to talk like that, do unto them before they do unto thee.

They don't need to use the coded language now as they're in power.

Americans have no one to blame but themselves, Germans understood this only after the fall of Berlin

@hosford42 sorry, but I'm not American, so to the rest of the world, this is watching Hitler rise while the population ignores what they need to do. Blame is all we have right now, as we've lived under American hegemony for our entire lives.

I've been saying for months, before he was even inaugurated, you have three choices to remain "free" as a citizen of a fascist state: collaborator, partisan, or refugee

@sortius But what *do* we do? We aren't ignoring it. At least I'm not, and most of the others here aren't. The problem is, what actions do we even take to stop it? The nation is like a runaway train, and all I know to do is get out and push. One person taking a stand alone ends up a smear on the tracks. So, I've been trying to drum up support for more collective, practical action.

the only thing I can think off is strikes and/or actions that have an economical impact.

they still need the country to run properly to carry out their odious plan. (gas, food)

money is worthless if you cannot buy anything with it.

I do not have the answer, but this is the path I would explore

@andytiedye I don't think that MAGA, the people, are as die-hard on party line as their members of Congress. Pretty sure many of them will lose Medicaid, or have lost their governmental, production, or even scientific jobs because of the current administration's policies; or they know and like people who will/have. Many also dislike the possibility of a new war

@hosford42 I was born in France. My first thought reading the news from your country since 6 months are always based on my education and culture, but I know that it can’t be applied to yours.

But I’m really hoping that his terrible law will initiate a national movement of resistance (maybe not the best word, it’s an allusion to the French Resistance during WWII, my uncle was a member of the Maquis). And/or a general strike.
