At the end of #StarTrekDS9 S1E3, Keiko instructs the children in her new school to “turn on [their] computers” to begin the lesson.

At the time of filming, home computers were a thing, but they were normally left powered off when not in use.

What about now? Turning a computer on or off is still possible, of course, but is it still common?

I still routinely turn my computer(s) off.

@argv_minus_one Even in that world, she could have simply meant “light up the screen”.
@argv_minus_one Not sure how to vote. I turn off my laptops since they do not cool well when closed. I turn off Windows desktop so it doesn't catch a virus. I leave my Linux desktops running.

Work Laptop: sleep (group policy doesn't allow me to hibernate).
Personal laptop: hibernate.

I bet after the ai wars the humans started turning their computers off regularly again, just to be sure they could 😬

@argv_minus_one Back in Windows 10 days, I'd leave my computers on 24/7. If it needed a restart for updates, it would do it automatically late at night.

But they broke all of that that, and anyway electricity has gotten so expensive that it's better to just shut down when I'm done for the day.

My Linux computers... I'm less concerned. Sometimes I turn them off, sometimes I don't bother.

@argv_minus_one I turn off my PC every night, but still have a smartphone that is always on...
@argv_minus_one I turn off my computers much more often now, as they boot off of SSDs much faster than older computers with spinning platters
@argv_minus_one My personal PC is on 24 hours a day, but in sleep mode for most of that time. I want it available at a moment's notice. On the other hand, my work laptop is powered up and shut down every work day and is never left running.
@argv_minus_one I voted “on,” but that’s not 100% accurate. When my laptop’s at home, it’s generally on, but usually sleeping. When I take it traveling, maybe once or twice a week, I shut it down for the trip. It’s a gaming unit with good performance, but sketchy batteries.
@argv_minus_one My MacBook used to sleep on trips, but that puppy stayed on for weeks at a time. I didn’t have as much occasion to travel with it either.

I used to leave my servers on all the time and then my mom showed me the power bill

I no longer have those massive power sucking power supplies, but still it keeps my energy bill down to leave them off. Actually I do have one I'm trying to get rid of, an HP Z800 workstation with dual 4-core Xeon processors and a 1250 w power supply. But my main desktop is a Lenovo M700 Tiny, max 35 watts.
@argv_minus_one Electricity here cuts off randomly often enough that I run it off UPS and still don't leave it unsupervised (meaning I'm around to know if power went off)
@argv_minus_one I haven't left a PC on unused for more than hour, ever since I gave up on crap motherboards and revolving rust :-)
@argv_minus_one with my desktop power rated at 1.6kW I just can't leave it on. Electrical engineer in me screams if I do
