One of my favourite events every year is @SoCraTes_UK , and this year has been no exception. SoCraTes is a software crafting unconference / open space event. There are versions all over the world, but obviously being in my home country, the UK event is particularly close to my heart.

This year’s event happened a few weeks ago at the end of May, and as usual I had a great time.

Being an unconference means there are no booked speakers or sessions planned in advance - instead the content comes from the attendees and is often made up on the spot. Despite being run by and for the tech community, I often find myself consuming / creating very little tech content and instead taking the opportunity to celebrate music, nature and games with my fellow geeks.
This year my highlights were:
A session run by @Matthew Butt on using handbells to recreate the intricate algorithms played by bellringers
The SoCraTes Song (I may even share a video soon…)
A fascinating array of lightning talks
Stargazing with @Matthew Butt and @Ian Rohde-Bell
Sharing Obsidian tips
Parlour games
Sharing insights on being neurodivergent
Walking through the grounds of the gorgeous venue
Going swimming
Swapping tips on tech career breaks

Discussing the interaction of senior tech positions and knowledge / experience.
And… most excitingly for me…

…I’ve joined the SoCraTes UK organising committee (@Organisers SoCraTes UK )! Watch this space for lots more, but the main news is that I’m planning to organise another training day for next year’s event, at least as good as last year’s training day: https://socratesuk.org/training_day.html

Keep an eye on our website to find out about next year’s event and sign up early to beat the rush: https://socratesuk.org/
