That's the point, politicians like Newsom won't defeat the greater evil. They are complicit with it.
Want to defeat the greater evil? Kick Newsom to the side and replace him with someone principled who's willing to give more than speeches and empty virtue signaling.
Don't try to run him for president, he will lose, and that will benefit the greater evil. Do your part, stop voting for neolibs and stop giving them rhetorical cover.
