The surviving elements of the late 1970s Garnethill Mural Project established by the artist John Kraska, who died earlier this week. This was one of the first community-based projects in Glasgow to create murals on exposed gable ends of the city's tenements as part of a scheme to improve the local environment.

The now-faded geometric mural on the left, which was selected by a public vote, was created by local Garnethill artist Tommy Lydon, while the mosaic mural just visible on the right was created with the help of local children. In addition, the park in the foreground, which had previoulsy been an area of wasteland, was also established as part of this project. A third mural further west on Hill Street by John himself no longer exists. The park and the murals were officially opened in 1979.

Since this time, similar community-based projects have been carried out across Glasgow, and indeed continue to this day.
