R U There?

It's a conceptual album on different emotions/feelings starting with the letter R, up until the (long and emotional) title track that ends the album.

I've listened to it so many times that I'm not objective about it anymore. Sometimes I think it's the best thing I ever recorded, others I hate it, and often this happens from one minute to the other. I hope you'll provide some balance, so please feel honest to tell me what you liked, and what you didn't!

There are a few key differences from my previous efforts:

* All guitars were recorded using my #harleybenton #dnafxgitcore, instead of the Line6 X3 Live I've been using so far: I experimented a lot, but was this an actual improvement?
* For the orchestra, besides VPO and KBH strings, I also used the free BBCSO VST by Spitfire Audio, to give more layers and textures: did it help, or did it make everything more confused and messy?
* I got back to singing on a couple of tracks (but not much)

There's also a few things that unfortunately didn't change, though:

* Drums still suck, I know, and the more "metal" sound doesn't always fit. I'm already planning to play a bit more with the AVL drumkits in the future
* My voice still sucks as well, but there's not much I can do about it: I kept the vocal parts short, so I guess that helped 😂

@lminiero very impressive so far at 4 tracks in. Great compositions, love the way you integrated the orchestral parts and the guitars sound killer.

@philsawa thanks, that's an interesting definition! 😄 That track is one I'm particularly fond of, as the themes are very old (I composed them close to 25 years ago), and the song itself is a bit "Satriani-esque", even though I don't usually listen much to Satriani

The quiet strumming at 11:30 in R U There seems a fitting end to this theatrical masterpiece...

Ah, but there was more to be said musically.

There is some progressiveness happening in this country at the moment and your music (to me: ) exemplifies the forward motion that seems well planned and thought out - far beyond what many are capable

A couple of the earlier songs high end guitar sounds were a bit piercing which perhaps is to be expected on android

Even back when i had a double pedal for my singluar base drum i still couldn't kick it as quickly as your open source sofware kit can.

Loved the surprises of sax and tambourine which add to the wide range of emotions felt

@philsawa thank you for your very kind words, I'm really glad you liked it so much!

I think I get what you mean by piercing, as in some of the songs the distortion can be a bit harsh sounding: I didn't really touch the DNAfx presets, and only did limited EQ on guitars, which I should probably have done more even mixing with other than headphones or laptop in mind 😅

And on drums, yeah, even when I try to write something more somber, the metalhead in me sometimes still prevails 🤣
