This shows why encryption matters.

Journalists depend on end-to-end encryption to protect sources, activists, dissidents, and their lives. 🔒

@Tutanota

Question: Which percentage of these vulnerable people use operating systems or products which … kind of read their data for own purposes?

@Tutanota

The US government or The Sun compromising journalists' email accounts is just as dangerous as China doing so.

Highlighting a single adversary is mere political propaganda.

@Tutanota i like how the article conveniently omits pgp (the go-to mail encryption standard)
@xyla @Tutanota but the problem with pgp is, it works on gmail too /hj

also "encrypted alternative to whatsapp" is kind of a misleading phrase imo. whatsapp has plenty of issues, however there's no need to imply that it isn't encrypted.
@Tutanota While this is a good opportunity to promote Tuta, end-to-end encryption is just one part of securing things.

End-to-end encryption helps when there's a compromise in the provider, but it may not help if either of the machines at either end are compromised.

No matter, though, people shouldn't use big, dumb, faceless corporations like Google, Amazon or Microsoft. Microsoft is particularly bad because they are often the best example of what not to do.
