windows 11 has been pinning this hard drive at 100% for the past five minutes
@niko Windows 10 and later effectively cannot be run on a mechanical hard drive due to the load of file indexing

@niko I highly recommend reading over the options available via SophiaScript to find performance optimizations for Windows 10/11: https://github.com/farag2/Sophia-Script-for-Windows

I also recommend using Enterprise editions instead of consumer editions since you can fully disable telemetry and Bing search suggestions by changing group policies and, if possible, the IoT builds which do not include most of the things I consider “bloatware” like Copilot, Xbox-related apps, the Microsoft Store, and advertisements

@slightlyflightyone tbh if i'm going to reinstall the OS i'm really tempted to just go with Fedora KDE

@niko fair lol

you can change Windows editions without reinstalling using option 7 of the Microsoft Activation Scripts though: https://massgrave.dev/#Method_1_-_PowerShell

Microsoft Activation Scripts (MAS) | MAS

Open-source Windows and Office activator featuring HWID, Ohook, TSforge, KMS38, and Online KMS activation methods, along with advanced troubleshooting.

@slightlyflightyone if i can get things to fuck off and the OS to just let her do her things without any popups or nags i could do that

@niko if it’s about Windows 10 approaching end-of-life, you could just switch to the LTSC (long-term support channel) and extend support to 2032

the MAS website also has a quick guide on doing that: https://massgrave.dev/windows10_eol

Windows 10 Updates After End-Of-Life | MAS

This document explains how users can receive official updates after the retirement date of Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.

@slightlyflightyone the laptop is already running w11
@niko o! switching to Enterprise might do it for you then
