Introducing the new https://fediverse.info ✨
@dansup I'm getting SSL certificate issues with it
@ada I'm looking into this, thanks for the report!
@dansup When I use OpenDNS, the page also gets reported as a phishing site. I had to switch DNS providers to access it
@dansup this is awesome! πŸ‘ Well done!

@dansup @pixelfed

It took me a while to figure it out, because the video didn't/wouldn't play.

The find-a-community function is wonderful!

@PKYo @dansup Fixed!

@pixelfed @dansup

Very wow.

What's missing from the video is a final sentence that says "scroll down and click to find your community".

Ironically, having the video may distract people from the (in my opinion) more important part of the site: the tool that lets you find the right instance.

What is your main goal? Get the video watched, or get people to find an instance? πŸ˜…

@pixelfed @PKYo @dansup is this why the default for the video of @_elena is now YouTube? (Feels a bit odd to have that so prominently on the landing page, but if its a solution to a problem I understand.)

@dansup
This question needs an important point in the answer.

": What is an "instance"? How do I pick one?"

Please do not tell people to pick a server or an instance. They are gone when they read it. Replace with "provider".

The answer should speak to what they know, like:

It's picking a provider, just like you pick a cellphone provider or email provider. It's no different. They connect you to the Fediverse to talk to anyone else. You choose your provider based on which you feel is the right fit in terms of how they run their service and their rules. Just how you picked your financial institution.

Something like this. I'm not a great writer.

@admin @dansup this is not the common naming. I think it is not useful to create a new lingo for a few more users.
Besides, I think that millenials and younger generations already know what an instance is. Probably gen x too.
@tom @admin @dansup I'm gen Z and not even my peers know about this stuff. Even if we don't want to change the wording, we should still add the email analogy or something like it
@buonhobo @admin @dansup but it is not like e-mail. The discussion was about instance anyways.
You could say its like Twitter with different community circles. You join the community which fits best and still can explore all communities.

@tom @buonhobo @dansup
If you say pick a server or pick an instance, people leave.

You have to relate new things to what people already know. And new terminology to do this is perfectly acceptable.

I don't understand why using different words would be unacceptable.

I never said it's like email. I said you onboard like email. You pick a provider that connects you to the Fediverse just as you pick an email provider that connects you to email, or a phone company to connect to the grid, or a bank to connect to the financial system, or an insurance company to connect to the insurance infrastructure, or an electric company to connect to the electric grid. List goes on. People pick providers. They don't pick servers and instances. It's techie and they run away.

@tom @admin @dansup then, at least, translate it into non-geek "provider" right where it is introduced. To teach the new lingo.
@dansup Not sure why but, NextDNS is picking this up as an AI-derived threat. I wonder if "fediverse" is a flagged term or because this is a newer domain.
@dansup laggy

@clot27 @dansup same here in FF for Android 13, laggy scrolling down.

very cool website :)
beautiful

@dansup 😍 Also, excellent to see @_elena’s video right up front!
@dansup How did you build up the directory? Do you just crawl the whole fediverse? :D

@kevinveenbirkenbach Nope, I started a campaign where people needed to add #fedi22 to their profile bio and then self-submit to the directory.

I still haven't finished redesigning that yet, but it will soon allow self-submission and removal.

(Yeah, fediverse.info people directory is to blame for that pesky #fedi22 hashtag you see everywhere)

@dansup Did you decide against a Crawler for privacy reasons? Actually it would be nice to have an overall directory without adding a tag.

@kevinveenbirkenbach Yes I did, this needs to be opt-in explicitly.

The fediverse has a long history of crawlers that are opt-out that eventually shut down due to the outcry, and understandably so.

@dansup @kevinveenbirkenbach

thanks for the explainer on the hashtag, i was really confused seeing it on others' profiles. πŸ˜…

@dansup Not to be rude, but aren’t you all picking up way to many side quests here? First there was fedidb, then fediwatch, and now this. Pixelfed is a super cool app, but it still needs active work done. Plus, a lot of these are form over function. Are you making sure all your websites load well on old hardware? How about accessibility? The Pixelfed iOS app still has many unlabeled icons that make screen reader use very difficult.

Just please make sure y’all are maintaining your focus!

@dansup beautiful, but a bit heavy. It lags on my 'not so old' smartphone.

@dansup I'm surprised that Lemmy isn't mentioned either under blogging or discussion.

#lemmy #fediverse

@chris @dansup I'd recommend Piefed or Kbin over Lemmy.

The Lemmy devs and their instances (lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml) are a bunch of weirdos who ban or suppress anyone who disagrees with their political agenda. No need for anyone to support that, financially or by using their software. See https://sh.itjust.works/c/meanwhileongrad

@CpyJx πŸ‰ Strike /kbin, add Mbin, a /kbin fork.

Ernest Wisniewski, /kbin's creator and main dev, has officially declared /kbin dead, ceased all development and shut down both the official /kbin website and the /kbin lighthouse instance in 2024. The last commit on the still existing git repository is from two years ago. Here's some more about this.

@dansup Nice work, whoever did the site design!
@dansup Fun! How does one get added to the people directory?
@dansup
It looks nice but it is super laggy. I can't scroll it smoothly. Oh and it sounds weird that the default video platform used to show the video is YouTube instead of peertube.
Thanks for maintaining this site though.

@dansup requires JavaScript, and is completely blank until the user enables it. At least the text portions could be served and the fancy bits added on top of it.
