Congrats to JD Vance for gaining 63,402 BLOCKS in the last 24 hours (and climbing) on Bluesky!

That currently puts the Vice President of the United States of America at the #2 most blocked account on the platform.

He'll probably reach #1 this weekend.

Make that 63,403. 😉

He's now being automagically blocked by 659,822 users via block lists that user's on Bluesky can subscribe to. And that number is increasing basically every second.

Update: now blocked by 728,375 users via lists

@toddalstrom

Could someone explain a hypothetical.

If Vance were to join mastodon by comparison, assuming a similar desire to block from so many users, how differently might this play out based on the way that federation works within an Activity Pub context.

Just trying to understand the practical nature of the two protocols as applied to this case.

From what I understand of ATProrocol all that folks blocking achieves is it filters that account off for that user but otherwise the account can roll along just fine to other users. Correct me if I’m wrong here also. Keen to know more.

@richiekhoo Good question. I'm going to tap @Gargron @evan @laurenshof on this one.

@toddalstrom @richiekhoo @Gargron @evan

fediverse would tear itself apart if vance joined an instance lol

problem is that people (rightfully) hate vance for who he is outside of fedi. but every CoC and ToS from large open-registration fedi instances only deal with conduct that happens while on the fedi server. so if youre a fedi admin and vance joins your server and simply posts 'hello world', what do you do?

@toddalstrom @richiekhoo @Gargron @evan

if you dont ban vance, people on fedi will be extremely mad at you, widespread defederation and signficiant part of your server users will leave

but if you do ban vance, you risk the wrath of the VP of the US and his goon Barr at the FCC. Barr has been vocal about wanting to censor social media sites because of censorship against republicans. banning the US VP when no clear ToS violation has happened will be very excited to Barr

@toddalstrom @richiekhoo @Gargron @evan

that said, the best course of action would likely to ban vance asap. but i very much do not envy a fedi admin, especially if they are in the usa, if they ever end up with that decision. thats the type of decision that goes way beyond what should be expected of an unpaid volunteering position

@laurenshof @toddalstrom @richiekhoo Yeah, and that's probably the exact plan with Bluesky…

@mackuba although since mastodon (at least .social) is operated in Germany, unless things have changed, surely they can't really go after them..

but yeah this is hard bc I can see literally every instance just blocking mastodon[.]social whilst they "wait" for them to ban them, but they never would as you said above, if they were to not ban him...

@jglypt Yeah I think in case of Mastodon this is all just hypothetical basically, because:

@richiekhoo Just saw your edit/additional thoughts. Yes, if I were to block his account here...it's blocked just for me. And if his account was on another instance, I could block the entire instance (and all users on it)...just for me.

And an instance can block a user, or another instance, for all users on its instance. That's where you could see some wider blocking occurring.

On Bluesky, JD Vance has also been added to block lists, so numbers are actually much higher. Currently: 659,772

@toddalstrom Who is/was the #1 most blocked account on Bluesky?
@helianthropy Jesse Singal was #1, but now JD Vance is.
