@rbreich Ike was to the left of Harris, Biden, Obama, and Clinton on all the most important issues.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."

Rock- ribbed Republicans like Ike went extinct around the time of Reagan.

On the other hand Ike created the military industrial academic complex and added "under God" to our pledge of allegiance.

@Dave_Goldsmith @rbreich Eisenhower Republicans were wrong about many things, but at least they generally had a grip on reality. That may be a low bar, but it sure looks good after years of MAGA.

@BruceMirken @rbreich

Maga believes and so far they have good reason to that they can create their own reality. It seems impossible that Maga- reality is sustainable but everything about Maga has seemed impossible to me from the start.

@Dave_Goldsmith His VP wasn't great either.

@Thad

His veep signed into law all of Ralph Nader's reforms like OSHA, EPA, FOIA, etc. I'm old enough to remember calling Nixon the Antichrist but in retrospect he was more progressive than any Democrat since LBJ.

@rbreich The last good Republican president.

@rbreich

Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal, sold fighter jets and tanks, lowered military production to near-zero, went neutral, and signed peace deals with everyone.

The result? It got invaded, attacked, bombed, left to fight alone. Children are being stolen, raped, killed.

So Eisenhower was right and wrong. While there are tyrants out there, freedom must be armed better.

@joaocosta @rbreich What do you mean "freedom"? Western imperialism? No country fights for freedom, each one fights for its favourite brand of oppression.

@yqn @rbreich

Great question. To get a proper answer, I suggest you read this excellent book:

On Freedom

A brilliant exploration of freedom โ€“ what it is, how itโ€™s been misunderstood, and why itโ€™s our only chance for survival โ€“ by the acclaimed, bestselling author of On Tyranny. Freedom is the great Western commitment, but we have lost sight of what it means โ€“ and this is leading us into crisis. Too many of us look at freedom as the absence of state power: we think weโ€™re free if we can do and say as we please, and protect ourselves from government interference. But true freedom isnโ€™t so much freedom from, as freedom to โ€“ the freedom to thrive, to take risks for futures we choose by working together. Freedom is the value that makes all other values possible. Drawing on the work of philosophers and political dissidents, conversations with contemporary thinkers and his own experiences, Snyder identifies the practices and attitudes โ€“ the habits of mind โ€“ that will allow us to design a government in which we and future generations can flourish. We come to appreciate the importance of traditions but also the role of institutions. Intimate yet ambitious, this book helps forge a new consensus rooted in a politics of abundance, generosity and grace. Snyderโ€™s book On Tyranny has inspired millions around the world to fight for freedom; On Freedom helps us see exactly what weโ€™re fighting for. It is a thrilling intellectual journey and a tour de force of political philosophy.

@joaocosta @rbreich If this book didn't give you the means to answer my questions, why should I read it? How about you start answering something?

@yqn

By "freedom" I mean what everyone else does. Check the dictionary if you are unsure. Or read the book if you can cope with more.

Western imperialism? โ€” No, a peaceful country being invaded by an empire because it was free and disarmed.

No country fights for freedom โ€” Citizens do fight for their freedom. History is full of examples. Learn them.

each one fights for its favourite brand of oppression โ€” How do you know? Have you asked them or want to impose your ideology on others?

@rbreich

@rbreich I remember reading the phrase "humanity hanging on a cross of iron" and having the most violent shiver. When someone whose life has been dedicated to the practice of war tells you to avoid something related to war, listen.
