It seems #Apple is helpfully censoring your music collection now.

I have a carefully organised and saved (not always downloaded) Apple Music Library, but listening to Hypnotize by System of a Down I noticed “asshole” was being censored 🙃

The normal version of the album has been totally removed from the Apple Music catalogue, which also seems to have completely broken the iPhone's synced library so much the song titles are missing.

We're back to physical media or piracy having the best UX.

@True_Heresy Frack this sucks. The wierd US Christian moral police being enforced upon us.

They do not want you to hear bad words but if you have a gun and shoot someone that is just fine 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

@stadsplanering It’s so weird, I’m in the UK ffs.

Literally the next two lines are “When I killed your rock ’n roll/Mow down the sexy people”

It’s just so weird, I don’t even know what you’re supposed to do if it keeps happening.

I’m liking hosting my own music on my server so far though, I can just pay the artist some actual money then download/rip some files and do whatever I want; who knew 🙃!?

Now I just need Plex to support a library view of Albums > By Artist > By Year I’d be set.

@True_Heresy @stadsplanering If Plex also supported https://mas.to/@miblo/110085960626819346 then maybe – it's a very airy fairy maaaybe, mind, since I don't actually need serving up for multiple devices – I'd switch to it myself from mpd+ncmpcpp.

#Music Ecosystem Dream Let's face it, who of us music lovers has pirated nothing? I fairly refuse to do it myself these days, but my collection is full of past piracy. My dream is of a music player that acknowledges piracy and lets us say how we got tracks, whether by official or pirated means. It'd also let us pick our preferred outlet or price for each track / release, and tot up our outstanding amount. Then, with artists having a way to receive money, we may pay off piracy after the fact.

@miblo @stadsplanering And links out to discogs or whatever if you want to get physical copies. Anything to let artists be compensated would be nice.
@True_Heresy @stadsplanering Oh yeah, that'd be cool. If our stuff is tagged with MusicBrainz, as most of mine is, we actually already have the means to get the Discogs link!

@True_Heresy @stadsplanering For whatever it’s worth: Plex may not directly support the view you describe, but its companion app, Plexamp, certainly does.

Too few people know about Plexamp, I’ve noticed. I like it lots.

https://www.plex.tv/plexamp/

@cmdrmoto @stadsplanering yup, I’ve been really liking Plexamp, and it does have the sorting I’m looking for 😊
I was meaning that I find it very weird that sorting that way doesn’t exist for the web view, where I actually manage my library!? It’d be nice because it’s how I can quickly see what’s missing. Still, minor quibble compared to the actual music I want disappearing or changing without telling me 😅
@True_Heresy I love my corporation grey advertising friendly media
@Baa Beige is the only colour that makes me feel feelings now
@True_Heresy @puppygirlhornypost2 I suspect more of a Sony Music Entertainment fuck up because my Mezmerize and Toxicity albums still show up as explicit in Apple Music it’s just Hypnotize that’s changed 🤔
@fuchsiii @puppygirlhornypost2 I didn’t even check I was so annoyed lol.
Looking now, in my library I’m getting the same blank track name error on Mezmerize as well, and Toxicity shows up without any explicit or clean tags… but both are playing the correct and uncensored versions ???
It’s really stellar work all round 😒
@True_Heresy yeah i had to ditch apple music a couple years back because it was >85% trying to play not the songs in my library

really insane stuff that i can only imagine is the combination of them getting into the programmatic ad biz and moronic PMs or "HIC" or whatever special term they give them over there thinking listening time is something to optimize for so now i have to have an adversarial relationship with my music playback soft because it's always trying to trick me into playing something i don't want to listen to
@crow I genuinely think it may just be a complete lack of care for the quality of their own service, users, or artists. Why bother when they are making so much not trying to do or be better… which might be worse than some weird, but actually considered, choice to censor things?
@True_Heresy while im being a hater; do you remember when they had that terrible bubble UI for selecting music genres you were into?

i was like a 2D circle physics simulation, and tapping on a genre made the bubble bigger (and you could do this twice)

this ofc moved all the bubbles around and also as you selected genres it would push some bubbles off the screen as they got larger

also you couldn't undo making a bubble bigger so you had to accurately hit these moving bubbles while not selecting them in the "wrong" order or you wouldn't be able to select all the ones you wanted

it was crazy and shortlived
@crow I think I do? Either way it sounds perfect.
I can never forget Ping though 😂, I don’t know if they’ve ever retreated further or faster from a complete misfire?

@True_Heresy oh man yeah, i remember being very confused why i needed my music player to be a social network

Ping was announced by Apple CEO Steve Jobs as being "sort of like Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes," but stating that "Ping is not Facebook" and "it is not Twitter," instead describing it as "something else ... all about music."looks like the vision for it may have not been clear to anyone lol

@True_Heresy This feels like a cursed digital successor to how certain retailers would refuse to carry uncensored versions of "Parental Advisory / Explicit Content" works.

Thought we were done with petty puritanism but I guess not?

@AFriendlyBeagle It may be that (and I fear for the US and its future regarding Puritanical stuff…) but as I said to someone else here; “I genuinely think it may just be a complete lack of care for the quality of their own service, users, or artists. Why bother when they are making so much not trying to do or be better… which might be worse than some weird, but actually considered, choice to censor things?” (Sorry to literally quote myself like a knob but don’t know the masto-etiquette for that)
@True_Heresy Still good here. Caching, setting, or regional thing mayhap?
@Mhera I’m in the UK so, maybe? It’s fucked on all my devices so there’s definitely some discrepancy between what my local libraries *think* they’re going to play, and what’s actually on the Apple Music servers.
@True_Heresy I'm really interested in whether users of iTunes Match are affected. Like the whole thing with that product is if Apple doesn't have the track in their inventory, they just archive the one you upload in their cloud. It doesn't seem like that would fall victim to these kind of machinations, but...
@complexmath Oh now I want to have the means (or energy, or will) to test that - but I’d be very interested too. If that did happen it’d be really extra grim 😓

@True_Heresy @cdfinder

I’ve uploaded a few german Punk songs and they are all censored … there are now a lot off beeps. And those songs are not available via iTunes Store or Apple Music … they are from MY library

@matzelocal @cdfinder That’s just so shit. What is the point of a service that’ll silently censor your *own music files*. Grim 😓

@True_Heresy As always, there's an evergreen xkcd comic for the occasion:

@jadedcynic I don’t know how I’ve never seen this one before. It’s nuts that nothing is better, still.
@True_Heresy Way back when, I used to suspect that Apple was messing with my Apple Music Library. I started just plain copy-pasting the entire library listing to a git-tracked text file and watching the changes week over week. It was rare that nothing would change a given week. So I'm not using Apple Music anymore.
@uupis It’s depressing you have to diff your own library to check (and actually confirm) the people you’re paying are fucking with it.
@True_Heresy And yet the Taylor Swift explicit songs with swearing in are still there. Odd.
@donkey No part of it makes sense, imo. I wanted to check the same era and Slipknot is uncensored, newer stuff like Knocked Loose and Periphery are all good (although not always the full version 😡)
@True_Heresy Bizarre indeed! As far as I am aware, most of those kinds of changes actually are instructions from the recording industry companies, rather than Apple too. But that is a totally weird one.

@True_Heresy that’s interesting, I noticed they were censoring the lyrics probably a few years ago but that always seemed very much separate from the organization of explicit versions. Like even if the song was marked explicit, the lyrics were censored. It seemed pretty inconsistent at the time though.

With all of the streaming service shenanigans I’m not even sure if this is the type of thing a class action could claim “didn’t get what we paid for” since the line has gotten so blurred.

@haifisch It seems like a semi-random but infuriating fucking mess, the end result is not knowing if you’re actually getting the music you think you have saved or paid for, and no certainty over the version. Their “specially mastered for Apple” labels were probably a red flag, in hindsight; I don’t want the Apple version, I want the version that the artists made.
@True_Heresy it’s worse than that. They censor text that matches English swear words regardless of the locale/language. Example of Romanian “cum vad” (how I see) censored. Apple Music has been like that for ages. It seems that recently they started to censor locally too (see the empty screenshot).
@paint That is so catastrophically stupid 😔 is there no change with parental/region settings, or have you just found it to be a universal censoring?
The only Romanian swearing I know would also definitely not get flagged for the spelling (in English, anyway)😅
@True_Heresy I noticed it ages ago when a track I was listening to had “cum” censored. I think is limited to Apple Music and it’s a data issue. Their music catalogue is censored and probably music search autocomplete is using that. Word/keyboard/suggestion/replacement does not do that in Messages/other apps (yet).
@paint @True_Heresy most likely you can thank track owners here, they are the ones who uploads and chooses which version to upload (censored or not), and sadly copyright owners can be different per country.

@True_Heresy alwayshavebeen.jpg etc...

But yeah, I've always refused to engage in any sort of transaction for music that's not "I put money and you give me a regular ass file, no questions asked"

Any artist that doesn't make it available like that will simply never see my money. It's sad but... it's what you have to do in times of constant erosion of ownership

@True_Heresy
When I were out getting groceries last week I heard an edited version of "All summer long".
The only line that had been edited out was "We were smoking funny things."

The most stupid thing is the next song that came one was purely about "weed."

@daveSmeg Save me from “funny things” 😵
