"May I have your name?" the faerie said.

"William," she said with a smile.

"Ah ah!" The faerie gave a wicked laugh. "I have your name! Now no-one will call you by it!"

"Thank you," she said.

"To win it back, you must- what?"

"I will find me a new one," she said, "one that suits me better."

@MicroSFF Stories like this one have been going around in trans community for a while now. But uh, I think in the variants I've heard, the fae was actually aware of the subject being trans, so uh, this is still noticeably different – and it's a good plot, either way, always nice hearing it πŸ’šπŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ
@laura I have seen that variant on Tumblr before, and it came to mind when mulling over story ideas today. I just changed that element to give not-William a bit more wossname triumph thing.

@MicroSFF
This could make a good Rumplestiltskin variant.

What if Rumplestiltskin was saving a trans kid from his materialistic and abusive parents saying he would take the kid if they could not guess his name, but knowing they never would guess it, because in books and stories they could only find his dead name. Then if they acknowledge Rumplestiltskin is male, they would acknowledge the preferred gender of their child.

@MicroSFF
Haven't thought it through, eh, William the faerie?
@MicroSFF you have a gift and I applaud you for the way you wield it.
