💪🏼 We need to do this more often

Via Alt US Customs:

According to 50501, the organizers behind #NoKings, & @altnps.bsky.social, over 11 million people showed up in over 2,000 locations yesterday. These are the numbers we need to start getting through to the people we need to hear us.

@GottaLaff That's about 3.2% of the population. I wonder if we can hit 3.5 by the end of the summer.

EDIT: It looks like the real number is probably far lower, somewhere in the 4-6 million range. That's still very good, the biggest mass protest in US history, but AltNPS is not a reliable source.

The '3.5% rule': How a small minority can change the world

Nonviolent protests are twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts – and those engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change.

@GottaLaff I've looked into this a little bit more and it looks like the real number is probably in the 4 to 6 million range. AltNPS appears to be an unreliable source, as does nokingsmovement.com (the real No Kings website is nokings.org).

~5 million is still an incredible, record-setting turnout.

"No Kings Day" protests turn out millions, rebuking Trump

Our unofficial estimate is that around 4-6 million people attended a protest event yesterday. Anti-Trump resistance is outpacing 2017.

@GottaLaff That's 4.3% of the US adult population (258M)
@GottaLaff 50501 need to work on programming…
@GottaLaff Citizen protests must be sustained over long periods to be effective as we saw in the civil rights era and protests against the Vietnam War. Saturday's turnout was excellent. Congrats to Indivisible and all local organizations for their work. Big question: Can Americans sustain that level of energy over the long haul?
@fulanigirl This is EXACTLY what I've been saying!

@fulanigirl @GottaLaff

... That wasn't the first protest, literally there have been other massive protests every month since February.

What about the target Boycotts, the Tesla takedowns, The Economic Shutdown, etc? and that's just the stuff we know about (a lot of stuff is happening under the public eye).

So we have been in public protest and we will continue to do so, we haven't "Just started" give me a break.

That's the kind of gatekeeping that keeps hurting us leftists, it's always "starting" until it's done, or too late. We have been protesting and we will continue to do so.

@manvsxerox @fulanigirl Speaking for myself, and I'm guessing fulangirl... referring to HUGE protests like NoKings.

I've been covering all the daily ones, constantly. I'm more than aware, and have been posting about Maddow's segments on the daily/every state protests as often as she reports on them. + others.

So yes, we're very aware and grateful for those. But the immense ones get the press and have more of an obvious effect on Trump/his thugs. That was the point.

@manvsxerox @GottaLaff It is not gatekeeping at all but just your interpretation of a comment about an event. Of course there have been other demonstrations, and more boycotts than you are probably even aware of. The point is, if you are open to seeing it, is that mass demonstrations at a sustained level give power to a movement, hence the reference to the 60's and 70's. The MASS demonstrations are at a start. You don't need to try and school someone who has been an activist for 56 years.
@manvsxerox @GottaLaff In a movement all kinds of demonstrations are necessary, the quiet ones and the loud ones. But SUSTAINED protest is what I am talking about. Not for 3 months or 6 months but for as many years as it takes to turn the country back to democracy.

@GottaLaff

I expect Strength In Numbers 4-6 million estimate is much closer to reality.

The Alt National Park Service people give no information on how they've come up with their numbers, Strength In Numbers very much does.
