New theory on crash of Air India 787 suggests major systems failure

Clearer video appears to show that the RAT -- the Ram Air Turbine -- had deployed on the 787 just after takeoff and before the crash. The RAT is a small wind turbine designed to provide electrical power and/or hydraulic power in case of extreme emergency with those systems. On the 787 it reportedly deploys automatically and cannot be deployed by pilots.

@lauren This should be a fairly easy crash to analyse. What with the telemetry in the "black box", the Cockpit Voice Recorder, presumably ATC recordings and a (very) short flight so no risk of data overwrites.

That the plane is relatively intact will also make it easy to confirm telemetry such as flap position, landing gear, turbines spinning and whatnot.

I wouldn't be surprised to see an "interim" in a week or two.

Edit: for the three people on the planet who don't know the goto place for analysis of airplane crashes, blancolirio on youtube is the place to go.

@lauren Juan Browne (B777 1st Officer) mentioned that the B777 RAT door has hazard markings. It is connected is batteries and could (in freak circumstances) drop on to your head if you walked under it during pre-flight.
@lauren
Ram air turbine is a very unfortunate name
