My friend @julesthefox made this cool #accessibility tool for people who experience selective mutism. If this is you or someone you know please check out their Communication Cards at

From the website:

"CommCards host thoughtfully chosen words and phrases which are straightforward but which still allow for deeper expression. The cards can be decoupled from their ring and arranged in groups to communicate further complex concepts. Additionally, they are maximally accessible: from their inception, they have been crafted to be usable by–and thus communicate with–as wide an audience as possible. The text is rendered in OpenDyslexic3 and can be produced in many languages as needed; the palette has been tested for all major color vision deficiency types, and each card's text-to-color optical contrast is at least 7:1."

I'm very passionate about this project because not only do I have periods of selective mutism, I also have strong bouts of aphasia due to a minor stroke I had about a decade ago. This is also a very useful tool in crowded places where other people might not be able to hear you, such as conventions. Probably very helpful if you can't talk very loudly. Please give it a look and share it with somebody you might know who would find them useful.

@heathen_cat πŸ’™ What a wonderful idea! It's truly inspiring to see such thoughtful and innovative tools being created to support accessibility and communication for people experiencing selective mutism, aphasia, or other communication challenges.

I like that design of these Communication Cards is not only practical but also deeply considerate of the diverse needs of users, from the choice of font to the color contrast and the ability to customize the language. It's clear that a lot of care and understanding went into creating these cards, making them a powerful tool for expression and connection.

Thank you for sharing this resource, and kudos to @julesthefox for developing such a helpful and inclusive tool. 🌟

@debby @heathen_cat thank you for your kind words, and for checking out my work in general! I'm glad these are reaching folx I can help.
@heathen_cat If someone handed me a card to azk for a date, that's a point in favor of yes. They went out of their way to get passed a communication struggle to ask, and that definitely deserves consideration.
@hellomiakoda
The introduction cards are definitely cool as heck, and I should get some for conventions and meetups. For communication I had been using an app for kids, so the Comment Cards a little further down the page are what I would get more use out of.
@heathen_cat wow, that's really interesting. What is selective mutism?
@rlegowski1
Selective mutism as I understand it is not being able to speak verbally either for a temporary capacity or in a certain situation. For me if I've spent a weekend say at a convention I become extremely overwhelmed mentally and talking is a lot harder than using text. Some people with autism find talking a lot more difficult as well or have trouble getting people to understand them when they do talk so I find this to be a pretty useful tool
@heathen_cat will there be a way to buy these from the website, or do we need to email if we don't need a customized deck?
@Alairthephoenix
I'm going to hand your questions over to the creator @julesthefox because I'm not sure.

@Alairthephoenix @heathen_cat Hi there! I'm the aforementioned friend who designed these.
The decks are orderable straight from the site. If selections are made for customizations, I'll reach out to the provided email once the order reaches my inbox. Lemme know if you have other questions.

Thanks for checking out my stuff; I'm glad I'm reaching those I can help :D

@julesthefox You should know that the purchase box doesn't show up in the following browsers: Vivaldi (ipad, android), Firefox (PC), Microsoft Edge, DuckDuckGo browser (ipad,android). The purchase box for the Social Cards does show, but the Communication Cards, there's no purchase box that I can see in any of the above browsers.

@Alairthephoenix Well heck, would you believe the shop widget for the CommCards vanished from the page altogether somehow?

Anyway it's back now. Thanks for mentioning that... though I have no idea how it happened. πŸ˜…

@julesthefox no problem! I'm glad it's working properly again!

@heathen_cat @julesthefox

I could have done with those recently, but ag, my employer doesn't give a flying coin about me or my wellbeing...

@heathen_cat @julesthefox i’ve been experiencing some sort of anxiety disorder where i lock up unable to proceed with whatever it is i want to do, sometimes it seems random sometimes it’s obviously in response to high potential for heavy embarrasment, but it doesn’t always just apply to speech, brain just outright stops me doing things that i would percieve as cringe, i think being told to use cards like this would be a trigger for this..? as well as many activities a therapist might attempt; does that fall under SM or is there some other term for something similar but as applied to social interactions at large and not just speaking?
