The βwe're just following ordersβ statement is called the Nuremberg defense, claiming they should not be held accountable for their actions as they just did what superiors told them to.
This was rejected as a defense at the Nuremberg trials. Better luck next time!
As much as your comment is probably not meant in the earnest tone that I will continue to answer it, I do think what you are saying is concerning. Not because you are saying it, but because it is what we're all feeling, and that is on purpose.
We are numb to these news. Anything could happen and we'd know what to think of it, we'd know we're helpless and there's nothing we can do, and we keep scrolling. No consequences for the perpetrators, all consequences to us.
That's the point: The ridiculous things Trump says, the deliberate disinfo and the masses cheering it on. Extremist, dehumanizing statement after the other, normalizing it, maybe not our felt opposition to it, but whether we act against it when we see it in our circles, family, work. If you were to oppose such thought with the adequate response each day, you'd be more isolated, job-, and homeless.
Maybe all of us know how horrid the world is, but what has normalized is us not showing any opposition. No rage, nor adequate response. Our bar and expectations are so low, our leaders now can start wars and corrupt our democracy more than ever before. That is the purpose of such actions: numbing us.
Trump's words serve a purpose, and it is this. The news serve a purpose, and it is this. Fascism serves a purpose, and it is this.
You were not born as someone who cannot stand for their beliefs, you were prepared this way. With every financial crisis, every backlash, every existential threat, every news outlet, and every fairy-tale of nonviolent change.
And it is not just you, it's us. We are what the rich need us to be, for their world to come into fruition.
Very nice!
