@macmanx My 18 year old daughter took my 4MP digital camera on her holiday to Paris. When I asked why, she said 'No notifications, no distractions and no tracking.' I couldn't have been prouder 😊
@ResourcefulTech @macmanx That sounds awesome! 😃 You have a smart and intelligent daughter.
@edgren @macmanx Thanks. I was a little surprised, but it's good she's thinking more about being more present in the moment and valuing privacy. I hope other youngsters are thinking along the same lines.
@macmanx A modern smartphone barely even fits in a pocket, one of the main reasons why I use a Blackberry.
@macmanx @m I miss having a Motorola SLVR + GameBoy Advance Micro in my pocket.
@macmanx
Y'all had money! I had a landline phone and a very old battered Discman, no flip phone or nothing until 2008.
@macmanx love it. I have owned all three of those things. And I think I still own two of them.
@jessamyn I wish I still had my iPod.
@macmanx @jessamyn
I still have on my Cyclette the Nano I gave to my son for one of his birthday & which has since gone into “homo smartien” way. Six hundred tracks of our favorite songs in random mode, just happiness!
@macmanx Our cargo pants carried the burden.
@macmanx 2007. I had all of those items in that picture. The first #WoW expansion, the Nintendo #Wii and Windows Vista just came out. Life was good.
@macmanx They weren't free, just uninformed and even more eager for bullshit than today perhaps.
@macmanx
I would still be using my Nikon Coolpix if the battery compartment cover hadn't broken off. Can't hold the battery in and work the controls at the same time.
Went to buy another one, but the stores were nothing but smartphones, and they either had no cameras at all or $500+ specialty cameras because taking photos with anything other than a phone is now considered a niche hobby for affluent nerds.🤷‍♀️
@macmanx did they ever make an ipod in that colour that looks so cooool
@macmanx honestly carrying all 3 of these was still more practical than modern smartphones

like modern smartphones suck at music playback. no headphone jack, offline playback may not be an option either and even if battery life (both for the phone and the bluetooth headphones you're forced to use alongside it) is satisfactory when you buy them the types of batteries used nowadays degrade rapidly meaning they will not be satisfactory a few years down the line

modern smartphones kinda suck for photography too, they don't have real zoom capabilities because that would require putting an actual camera lens in the phone which even if it fit would just end up making the whole thing really fragile and overall, phone oems just heavily prioritise digital postprocessing over actual camera capabilities. its hard to do photography when i have no control over colours, aspect ratio (its always cropped by default so the image fills out the entire screen even though the sensor is actually 3:2)

for taking calls and instant messaging its not as different but what has changed is hit or miss (many more features, even more fragmentation, apple and google competeing on who can make the worse rcs implementation, almost everything depends on stable internet connections that we just dont always have)
@macmanx wifi calling is huge though, like i live in a tiny village where connection to the cellular tower is blocked by a mountain so i dont get cellular reception but thanks to wifi calling i can use the house's wired internet connection instead to make calls and its great
@macmanx Here's 90s version as well :D
@nickelson @macmanx those huge cd walkmans were beefy, especially if you could afford the cd skip prevention feature, I remember trying to walk around with CDs and getting the skips, but at least it had bass boost

@macmanx I'm kind of miss that time.

I wonder how many miss it too.

@macmanx I had it, and can confirm that the Motorola Razr was not very heavy
@macmanx From Argentina, here is my old daily kit
God I loved that phone
@macmanx and this is why cargo pants were so popular back then.
@macmanx the phone definitely says 12:56 not 12:34
@macmanx Let's agree and call that "millenial-core"
@macmanx I still have a digicam from 2007 myself, heh
@macmanx having the moto you needn't the ipod
@young_ullrich Only if you wanted to have more than 1 album with you. ;)
