Listen to the sound of Shenzhen, a city in China with 17,500,000 people. It's also a city where all the motorbikes, taxis and buses are battery powered.
No, no. I mean ALL of them.
Can we have this in our cities too please? πŸ™
@KiwiEV Sure we can. And even better, we can do it with public transport, without wasting space and resources for cars
@KiwiEV you hear your footsteps! Crazy nice. (that aspect at least)
@Niall What's surreal is that after 20 cars and bikes go past, all you can smell is cooked food from nearby vendors! It messes with your mind!
@KiwiEV wonderful :)
With our lack of emissions rules here sometimes a truck can go by and you can TASTE diesel fumes while eating cooked food...
FYI I picked up a Shenzhen style bike the other day: https://mastodon.nz/@Niall/114578535755480109

Attached: 1 image Just picked up my rash gamble of a crashed Niu Electric Scooter. I'm well happy, looks like body damage only. 2kWh battery & Bosch motor/controller seem fine. There is a catch though... #Niu #ElectricScooter #StopBurningStuff #NotJustCars #NotJustBikes

@Niall Walking past idling dirty, diesel vehicles while holding your breath is just part of Auckland life. 😐
@KiwiEV and Raglan and Otorohanga and and and and....
@Niall @KiwiEV One of the downsides of driving an EV … sitting behind a dirty diesel at the lights.
@debe @Niall @KiwiEV, I've imagined at times a Mad Max stile world with paint guns fitted to our vehicles and we can target smelly, noisy, road raging, etc, others.
(Not environmentally friendly but mentally pleasing).
@debe that's not actually limited to an EV, its just way more noticeable in an EV!
When I'm in charge all vehicle exhaust pipes will be mandated to go through the cabin.

A few years ago @notjustbikes
did a video

"Cities aren't loud, cars are loud"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTV-wwszGw8

EVs are quieter, but the faster the vehicle is, the louder the tire noise.

@KiwiEV
I didn't even have to turn my Bluetooth hearing devices/aids down! Sorry I shouted:(!)
@KiwiEV How I wish Apple would buy Weel – software-defined e-bikes would be so their style, and they could sell millions of them.
@KiwiEV it's a bit eerie but a welcome sight
@KiwiEV to quote @notjustbikes, β€œcities aren’t loud, cars are loud.”
@KiwiEV Yeah, this was something one immediately noticed also in Shanghai. Takes a bit to get used to but then it’s just pure awesome!

@KiwiEV

And also I notice the pavements/sidewalks are intact & there are no potholes in the road. How do they afford the infrastructure? 😐

@KiwiEV engine type isn't really that important, as cars noise is predominately the noise from tires which doesn't care about the engine type. It is the access to good public transportation and car exclusion zones that matters to be honest.
@KiwiEV Similar in Shanghai - lots of EVs. The first thing you notice, even in an advanced country like Singapore, where there aren't even many motorcycles or trucks, is the increased traffic noise because there are just fewer EVs
@KiwiEV I was pleasantly surprised by the low levels of smog and noise in Shanghai, for the same reason.
@KiwiEV
This also means 80% lesser fine dust emissions and no NOX and so on. And also driving on electricity is usually cheaper.
