Unfortunately PiHole is still tough to install on a local network, and even then, updates are not automatic and they can brick your setup (including your internet access), see their v6 with failed upgrades then v6.1 then v6.2
I have had one at my place forever, and I’ve tried installing others at relatives’ places (who don’t know how to manage it or recover in case of issues) and the experience has been enlightening for me
I had a relative tell me once, months after it was done, that they switched ISP and they asked the tech to plug the PiHole again, which the tech obliged but it obviously didn’t do anything at that point
The suggestion to reset the router in case of PiHole failure, is already way too much to ask mainstream users: too much troubleshooting, too much worry that the thing that should help protect then will eventually lock them out
This is all way too much mental load for anyone
And yeah we don’t have viable alternatives for the big social networks either, yet
