#Meta is giving their millions of users in Europe a phony "legitimate interests" cover-story for circumventing the #GDPR. It's no longer about selling data to 3rd parties, now it's about using data for impersonating people through #MetaAI.

I hope this will be challenged in court. Until then I will continue to use ad-blockers, clear cookies and device IDs, use multiple web browsers, make data as useless as I can, and remind other people to do the same. I don't mind if you call that #Luddism

@tg9541 There are no legitimate interests for browser cookies.
@yora I can imagine some, but there are alternative technologies; abuse of cookies drowns out that argument. Let's say I don't object.

@tg9541 Don't waste a minute on these countermeasures unless you have first, and with immediate effect, severed all and any ties w/ any Meta product whatsoever. PULL OUT of Zuck's shitholes! Shove the Meta crap where the sun don't shine!

Establish DNS-based filtering for your home network, e. g. #pihole as a first line of defence. This is hugely effective not only to protect computers, but also those devices w/o an UI to install adblockers & anti-tracking!

On top of that, harden acceptable web browsers & search engines w/ adblockers and anti-tracking. Learn #digitalselfdefence

@dazzr @tg9541 My dude. I can see you never understood Black Twitter. (It's about _community_, the one thing that is sine qua non for defeating fascism.) You can yell "boycott" all you want, but when Wal-Mart is ten minutes away and the closest union grocer is fifty miles?

I am not defending Meta. They are treasonous bastards. AND the function of good government is to help us bring the bastards to heel. The number of communities on there is large, and Friendica is not ready for prime time. (I wish it was!)

Only the Sith deal in absolutes. If that sounds accusatory, then re-examine your life choices.

@stonebear2 @tg9541

To each their own.

Tech bro Mark Zuckerberg lives off the Meta users' private data to make billions from targeted advertising. Use Meta crap and feed him. Communities active on Meta platforms also have to think about their life choices.

@stonebear2 @dazzr @tg9541 so very little is ready for prime time…

Unfortunately PiHole is still tough to install on a local network, and even then, updates are not automatic and they can brick your setup (including your internet access), see their v6 with failed upgrades then v6.1 then v6.2

I have had one at my place forever, and I’ve tried installing others at relatives’ places (who don’t know how to manage it or recover in case of issues) and the experience has been enlightening for me

I had a relative tell me once, months after it was done, that they switched ISP and they asked the tech to plug the PiHole again, which the tech obliged but it obviously didn’t do anything at that point

The suggestion to reset the router in case of PiHole failure, is already way too much to ask mainstream users: too much troubleshooting, too much worry that the thing that should help protect then will eventually lock them out

This is all way too much mental load for anyone

And yeah we don’t have viable alternatives for the big social networks either, yet

@GuillaumeRossolini These are very valid points. Any construct needs maintenance, and that means it needs the presence of a maintainer. There is nothing we can do about that, we need to care for the thinks we make, or re-make them every so often. Which is kind of the same.

As for the affordance of social networks: my mother still writes letters to say "thank you". That's much more valuable than a WhatsApp post that she uses to stay in touch. I can only appreciate that.

@stonebear2 @dazzr

@tg9541 I think https://noyb.eu/en is challenging them in court, as they are succesfully wont to do for the past few years.

It's one of the few non-profits I regularly support, and I recommend doing the same. You can support them for whatever amount you want, and with the 60$ a year tier you even get a one hour long consultation about your personal privacy rights problem, should you need it!

NOYB enforces your right to privacy everyday

Noyb - European Center for Digital Rights is a non-profit organization based in Vienna, Austria.

@tg9541 Glad I left FB in January. Pity I couldn't persuade any of my friends over there to do the same.
@Pamela1960 I had thought of deleting my account. The problem is that a lot of information on me is intertwined with lots of other people. By exploiting their data lots can be learned about a person even after the data pertaining to their profile has been deleted.
@tg9541 I don't really use meta products that much anyway but true
