🗺️🏯THE SECRET GARDEN🌿🍃

Aman Kyōto (アマン京都) is a luxury resort that shares its forested slopes with Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺), the 'Golden Pavilion'. We were fortunate enough to be invited to explore its historical grounds...a wonderland of moss, and rocks worthy of a castle keep.

Originally home to an artistic community that flourished in the 17th, the narrow valley was much later purchased by one of Japan's leading collectors of obi (帯 - kimono sashes), who envisioned constructing a textile museum here.

Work began, but his dream never came to fruition.

Aman Kyōto's many buildings, designed by the renowned Singapore-based architect Kerry Hill, perfectly blend into the 80 acre site.

The previous owner had a deep love for rocks, something that becomes apparently clear as you begin to wander along the stunning hewn-stone paths.

Of course there was also another very good reason for visiting Aman Kyōto in the afternoon🤔......🙌😊

🎭🍵THE ARTISAN'S ESCAPE🎨⚔️

In 1615 Tokugawa Ieyasu granted renowned craftsman Hon'ami Koetsu (本阿弥光悦 1558-1637) a parcel of land at Takagamine (鷹峯), on the condition that he relocate his family from the city.
Many believe the gift was actually a mild form of exile!

Kōetsu was a potter, lacquerer, and calligrapher, whose work inspired the founding of the Rinpa school of painting (琳派).

As a disciple of the disgraced tea master Furuta Oribe (古田織部), and thanks to his links to the Western daimyō, the Tokugawa likely distrusted Kōetsu.
