It's wild how all "Firmly Held Religious Beliefs" just involve being deliberately, intentionally shitty to other human beings.
@angiebaby Also, that however firmly held they may be, the beliefs themselves are amazingly pliable & can be bent into pretzels around anyone defying them - as long as it the holder themselves or someone they like..

@angiebaby

I know how to make them leave you alone. Tell them you don't attend church because that's where all the pedophiles hide.

@angiebaby It's even wilder when you read the original religious texts and get a sense for just how cherry-picked those beliefs are.

@angiebaby Well, perhaps not all. But using the phrase itself does seem to be a big honking red flag, doesn't it?

Most of the nicer religious beliefs — feeding the poor, helping your neighbour — don't really need defending out loud, though.

@fishidwardrobe @angiebaby so why is there hate for my church telling people that God loves them as they are, at pride?

Look at what happened to Bishop Budde - I'm sure her beliefs are deeply held too. But it seems that this stuff does need defending.

@path72 @fishidwardrobe @angiebaby

Because nobody wants you inflicting your Bronze Age mythology written by goat herders who didn't even understand where the sun went at night on them in this, the 21st Century

@angiebaby it's almost like the freedom to practice any given religion isn't under some kind of threat and the only thing people have to aggressively wave the "it's my firmly held religious belief" card about is when they want to do awful shit to other people.

@angiebaby Unless you’re Jewish and it is your firmly held religious belief that the life of the woman is more important than the life of the fetus, the fetus which is not a baby.

Then it turns out that “Judeo-Christian values” is a term that is tilted HEAVILY in one direction, and it ain’t toward Judaic values.

@angiebaby bigots are abusers and will attempt to disguise their abuse in anyway possible.

@angiebaby
Well, let's consider the source.

And while doing that, let's remember children are laughed at for believing in Santa Claus...
☠️ ✝️ ☠️

@clintruin @angiebaby Stealing that for future use (in December 😈)
@angiebaby I don't remember "being an asshole" as a value espoused in scripture. Or at least that explicitly.
@angiebaby all religions started as cults, cults thrive on an 'us vs them' mentality, it's baked in
@angiebaby What you on about, no they don't??

@angiebaby

Because you don't need to claim "religion" as a justification if you're actually being good to other people.

@PatrickoftheG

@angiebaby
Rational and justifiable beliefs don't need to be "firmly held", you can just think they are the most likely thing to be true.
@angiebaby things I believe should be "firmly held onto:" thick thighs, a roller coaster ride, briefcase money that you stumble upon, etc.

@angiebaby

Including their children.

@angiebaby Kind of like how the American Civil War was propelled by a singular, very specific "state's right."
