@philosophies ok stop: you have this post on like 20 servers and people following any of the hashtags get the same post over and over and over

I've blocked all of the accounts apart from this one and, had I not replied, I would have blocked this one too

I suspect I'm not alone. Stop it

@fastness

Dear Chris,

thank you very much for your feedback.

I didn't realize that my reach was that big ;-). I don't post on “20 servers” though. I also didn't know that the servers are interconnected.

Which post did you mean exactly or which hashtags?

No, so far I haven't received any apart from your feedback. But that's the way it is in the “brave new (media) world” - either too much or too little.

But I can try to reduce these posts a little. I don't want to annoy anyone with them. But perhaps you could also report back something substantive.

Kind regards
Dirk

@philosophies you have 7 accounts on 7 servers, the ones that I found in a search are in the image - I assume they're all you

When you post from one of those accounts it can be seen by anyone who follows that account whatever* server they are on. This is true for all of the accounts

When you use hashtags anyone who follows those hashtags from any* server will see those posts. However because you have 7 accounts anyone who follows any of those hashtags will see the post 7 times

1/n

@philosophies I saw the posts because I follow the "processing" hashtag (which in my case is because I'm looking for posts about the Processing programming language, used often by artists for generative art)

I saw 7 posts under this hashtag, one after the other, because every one of your accounts has made a post that everyone* can see. This is what I'd suggest might be a bit much, it would be better to post from one account only since I'm not sure you need 7

@philosophies however the * I've used a couple of times is because it isn't always the case that every server can see every other - it's possible for a server to break links with another ("defederate") so they don't see posts from there. This is generally pretty nuclear and where it does happen there are generally good reasons

The point still stands that one account should be visible from pretty much anywhere, just as you don't need to be on Gmail to email to a gmail.com address

@fastness

Dear Chris,

thank you very much for your detailed information.

I always assumed that each server had its own feed. That is also the reason why I have registered on 7 servers (I haven't counted them yet, but I believe you ;-).

The servers also react very differently to my posts, as the channels sometimes share a post and sometimes not. That was the reason for the accounts on several servers.

But I don't want to annoy anyone here, just inform them. I will therefore take your suggestion to heart and publish the posts on the servers with a time delay to avoid a flood of information.

I hope that I have been able to help you and I would be delighted if you would stop blocking me and perhaps leave a professional comment.

With best regards
Dirk

@philosophies all your posts are shared from all of the servers where you have accounts to all of the other servers in the whole world on Mastodon. There's no central algorithm at all: anyone who follows any of them will see all of your posts from that account. If anyone follows a hashtag you use they will see it from all of your accounts. There's no need for multiple accounts since they will all have the ability to reach anyone who wants to see them, on any server
@philosophies I haven't blocked this account because I saw your message, I did block the other accounts because they're redundant - you're sharing the same thing from all of them, why would I need to see more than one? Even with a time delay everyone who follows a hashtag you use will see your posts repeated every time, why will seeing it more than once help them? If you want to repeat posts over time you can repost something you posted earlier from one account, multiple accounts don't help
@philosophies on your final point - I'm not sure if there's a translation or other confusion but did you intend to imply that these comments I've made were not professional in some way? Apologies if so, that was not my intention; I thought there was a misunderstanding of how Mastodon works and I wanted to prevent people getting annoyed with you unnecessarily. However I hope you do believe me when I say that multiple accounts with the same information will not help

@fastness

Dear Chris,
then you really misunderstood me. I find your tips very helpful. I was more interested in perhaps learning something substantive from you about my posts and not just formalities.
I hope that this came across correctly ;-).
Kind regards
Dirk
