Evolving out of a gender-neutral framing of an involuntary celibate identity, the concept of `incels' has come to refer to an online community of men who bear antipathy towards themselves, women, and society-at-large for their perceived inability to find and maintain sexual relationships. By exploring incel language use on Reddit, a global online message board, we contextualize the incel community's online expressions of misogyny and real-world acts of violence perpetrated against women. After assembling around three million comments from incel-themed Reddit channels, we analyze the temporal dynamics of a data driven rank ordering of the glossary of phrases belonging to an emergent incel lexicon. Our study reveals the generation and normalization of an extensive coded misogynist vocabulary in service of the group's identity.
@janeadams I'm glad you are here among us on the fediverse.
I wonder if there are other people working on incel studies here 🤔
@koteisaev @JenLucPiquant yes it HAS TO BE Kremlin, right, because we Westerners are overall not so dumb as coming up with incel culture by ourselves, are we?

The stuff you're imagining DOES exist, but it is way creepier and less subtle than western hakikomori.
This is just a distraction though:
@JenLucPiquant
I'll admit idk much about incels, but I can understand this thinking. The current job market is a horrid mess. Trying to get a job wears down your soul, not too mention a single one might not be enough. Furthermore, it kind can be hard to form connections irl, especially if you aren't neurotypical. I can definitely see people being nihilistic as a result, especially if they cant find a support group
This study may have been done on incels, but I doubt this is limited to them.
Thanks @JenLucPiquant for this. I may have fallen for some black pill mentality and being autistic may not have helped. I'm still broken (40 yo, never had a girlfriend). We need more discourse like yours with more empathy and less "us vs them, the devil".
I'm sure we can do better as a society. We can help young guys not falling for that. We need a more caring approach and acknowledge one can struggle with friendship and love. I'm sure the more academic studies we have, the more you will find ways to lend a hand. Alana got an NGO started https://www.lovenotanger.org, we will build more.
I hope you will keep posting about this topic.
