Heading into #wildfire season, found out about this cheap and effective method of DIY air filtering - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corsi%E2%80%93Rosenthal_Box - gonna give it a try. #smoke sucks

These work great

@ElwoodCity @init6

Seconded. You can also make them from pretty much any fan and in different configurations:

For example, it is far cheaper for me to acquire MERV-13 furnace filters in the size most commonly used here instead of the square filters.

I also make life easier for myself by constructing a frame from coroplast and tape (or hot glue -- either works) which makes swapping out filters a cinch.

Duct tape is easiest to remove from coroplast (but both masking tape and painters tape work fine) for securing and replacing filters.

Also: having a #coroplast #frame allows for making a custom holder for the top fan regardless of fan size/style.

Been using these for 4 years now and they are excellent.

@likelyjanlukas @ElwoodCity I moved to gaffer tape for most things. Very strong yet easy to remove without residue. Not that it'd matter much for this application probably

@init6

Yeah, gaffer tape is overkill and likely more expensive than other tapes. That said, yes it will work just fine and whatever you have easy access to is *always* the best. 😀

PS: Adding carbon filter material is also helpful in reducing the stench from VOCs in the smoke.

#IKEA #Fornuftig and related filter boxes/tables are premade and have affordable filters. Most models will also take a VOC carbon filter.

I've also successfully used IKEA filters for #AirQuality and #VOC #wildfire #smoke for smaller DIY air filters for awkward spaces such as windows.

Good luck! 🙂
