Orwell had a brilliant wife, Eileen O’Shaughnessy, who was erased from history. Disappearing women is how patriarchy creates itself. Erasing women makes men into the main characters in life and in history, and women into supporting cast, or caste.

Trump’s Orwellian Erasure of Women

Through executive order, President Donald Trump has used an Orwellian playbook to erase women from the public record.

@amydiehl Yes, men need to create a better structure.
@amydiehl I had to look her up right away and there is a good entry in Wikipedia. Had no idea of the "rest of the story" and I'd completely forgotten Blair (really name, not Orwell) had a wife at all. The article describes her as "first wife" so naturally I had to look up Blair/Orwell to track down the second wife. Well, that whole story was just truly wretched and second wife Sonia looks to have been a business arrangement more than a marriage. All in all, I bet Eileen was actually the talented partner and her death was so sad.
@cobalt123 @amydiehl Anna Funder is an academic at my uni, and gave a brilliant speech last year on the topic, having just released her book. https://www.penguin.com.au/books/wifedom-9780143787112
Wifedom by Anna Funder

A blazing, genre-bending masterpiece from one of the most inventive writers of our time.

@cobalt123 @amydiehl Pitlochry Festival Theatre did a wonderful mini play about his final years recently as part of their Winter Words Festival. It was apparent in that that women were essential to his life but that he used them for his own ends. I hope they develop it into a full play.

@amydiehl slightly off topic, but if you're interested in how the system* perpetuates violence against the self then others, read Orwell's writing about his school days, and read about the awful relationship he and his contemporaries (like TH White and Robert Graves) had with sexuality and self hatred. You can see how the harm done to Orwell during his school days caused his attitude towards women.

*sorry, not comfortable with the word patriarchy, no disrespect to the intent of anyone who is

@amydiehl how many women voted for Trump?

@amydiehl

Women have been ignored by Historians for centuries.

The "Lady of the Mercians" was Æthelflæd. Daughter of Alfred the Great.
Aethelflaed, was a formidable military leader who actively fought and defended against Viking attacks.

Ask anyone in the UK or anywhere else if they know her name and what she did and they will say no.

But most will know the name of her Father Alfred the Great and her brother, Edward the Elder.

The wife-https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wife_(2017_film)
Film treatise on this phenomenon of erasing the existence and contributions of women- Husband gets Nobel prize for literature, because of his “unique” insights & perspectives on people.

Punchline: His wife (ghost)wrote all his material but would not have been published as patriarchy decided women are not writers, and removes any means of publication+recognition.

Question: Should the Nobel prize been awarded to her as she was the author?

@amydiehl @AndreaChalupa is working on a project about O'Shaughnessy. As she said, Orwell was a band, not just a person.
@amydiehl Disgusting.
Thanks for the post...
@amydiehl To be exact: We do know nothing but the theory, but Albert Einstein may have had more than just mental support by his wife https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mileva_Mari%C4%87

@amydiehl it is true that men are often erasing and taking credit for what wonen have achieved but very sadly, in November 2024, tens of millions of American women did a bloody good job of erasing themselves. The Australian opposition candidate for Prime Minister tried on a MAGA hat and Australian women buried him deep into the Cretaceous Layer
@amydiehl another reason some persons have a hate on for Wikipedia’s existence
@amydiehl misogyny on fire/fire the misogynist.

@amydiehl I'm with you on this one - and the one that bugs me the most is The Rider Waite tarot deck.

Rider (bloke (wizard)). Waite (the publisher (more blokes (probably))).

The person who actually drew the fucking things was Pixie Smith.

You see that Led Zepplin 4? The hermit standing on a mountain etc? That was drawn by this amazing proto-hippie named Pixie Smith and it took me about 40 years to find out.

I'm not even sure she was that good, but holy hell the impact she had.

@amydiehl just like in abrahamic religion's that say that Eve was created from the bone(r) of adam. What the hell? We all come from the womb!
